I was also lucky enough to get the beaver, but something interesting happened that i never saw or thought possible. The creatures i was hunting attacked the beaver!!!
Yes, the beaver will fight with any target if your troops aren't in range. If I remember correctly, you will even get the gold if the other side kills the beaver.
