That's the problem. Females friendzone males way earlier than males friendzone females. So there you are thinking you finally gotten a girlfriend and have been dating for several weeks (or months in some cases), but for all that time she thought you were just a friend :D

In my case, I've never had the awkward silence thing with any of my girlfriends.
Like I said before, humor is the key.
Even if you are not funny but stil try to be to impress her.
Just make her feel comfortable, let her talk and encourage her to talk.

Going further on the friendzoned thing(Offtopic I guess).
Tip to not get friendzoned;
Do not act like 99% of the guys that she knows. Girls hear all the time how beautiful they are from more then one guy(and saddly they stil think they are ugly).
If you do the same and call her beautiful(on a Facebookphoto with more then 950 reactions all saying how beautiful she is), she'd be like 'Oh thats another guy that thinks I'm beautiful'. And then, there's no way back..
In my experience, I don't compliment a girl about everything(I would say on that same Facebookphoto, Damn thats a big nose you've got there).
Who do you think she'll start talking to? The guy that is like the other 940 reactions calling her beautiful or the guy that said on a funny way that she has a big nose?
I can almost guarantee you, she'll start a conversation with the guy with the weird comment.
I always try to be the mysterious guy so she'll be curious about me.
Then when she shows she's interested, its just a matter of time.. |

'hardcore' jokes often scare girls, especially shy or sensitive, also I would not joke about her or anyone other than myself even if I find it funny and acceptable. Otherwise it might scare the girl away.
As it was said, try to read her facebook or other her profiles and impress her by arranging a little coincidence so that you can show that you share some hobbies or there are features of character in you and her that fit each other.
If she starts to feel anything to you, your dedication to her should make that feeling stronger. |

Brain does not stop working, it just works too much.
Relax and talk. If talking is hard, then go to cinema where you can enjoy some silence and you can talk about the movie later (and yeah don't ask "did you like it ?" ask something that can be discussed further, like "I really liked the way that sneaky bastard turned to be a good guy, I think he didn't die, I hope he will play on next movie too !") AND NEVER TALK JUST TO TALK. Conversations are not made under pressure, you talk only when you want to talk, otherwise it's trivial. HF |

Let's rephrase the question:
How can I change awkard silence to positive/comfortable silence?
As Pantheon wrote, it would be good to do some non-verbal things. Holding hands is just one of them :)
Speaking is a way of communication so once you meet you may feel the need of communication by speaking but there are too many thoughts that fight with each other and neither of them may seem to be good enough to say.
Gestures and touching is a very good way to break through awkward silence of non-communication. Once you hold her hand, you may say how beutiful they are or how warm and soft etc. Then she may say something about you and that will break the awkwardness. Connecting different ways of comunication will work great :) |
