Looks pretty fair to me, because if you do any fight, you know which monsters you face (if you catch a player, you can check his troops, and adapt your troops settlement to it) so why not with a caravan?

No it is done this way on purpose so it's not too easy. Caravans are meant to be very challenging...not knowing what you face is a nice thing IMO.
