Author | How to make a dummie of yourself. |
It all starts as a normal medicine student day. I studied at night, slept 3 hours, and after a day at the hospital I took an evening nap. Then comes my best friend with a cut finger saying that we should go into a pub to have few beers because he cut his finger. Then I convinced him that the best idea to do with a cut finger is not get a beer but go to a hospital.
Sadly, the doctor at emergency knew me, and told with joy, "hey come, you are stitching your friends wound". After this a series of blunders started happening to me for unknown reasons.
All started with nurse refusing to assist me, after which I got a little nervous, because that plastic shoe bag that goes on shoes couldnt fit on my head as I thought it was a cap. So I come in, put on the gloves, thouch the cut finger, which messes the gloves sterility. Then of course I needed another pair of gloves(not to mention that I always had put two fingers in one opening). So I take the needle to inject local painkillers and hit his bone. Ouch. Then I take the instrument to hold the needle backwards. Then I start making the first stitch unable to finish it. Doctor tells me how to finish it, I do it wrong so the nice little stitch refuses to stay tied and this is about the time when it becomes really bad as the sweat starts to fall right down from the top of my nose in big drops, destroying the whole aseptic conditions on the table with instruments.
So the whole result was 3 stitches, which would probably take 45 seconds to complete and became a nightmare which the doctor finished by demonstrating how it should be done. I would also like to note that there were 8 people(4 of them students) observing this whole masterpiece, this artwork of stupidity on my part.
And the thought of the day is: Never perform any surgical operations on your friends unless it is absolutely necessary or unless you know what you are doing. |
is this a true story?! if so very funny :D |
I would also like to apologise for my grammar mistakes and using word then so often. My English is not so good and after all, we had few beers because he cut his finger.. |

Sadly it is true, the mesocain, the blood, the pain and all. Sure, the story is just my interpretation, but I think I didnt miss any important fact and such stupidity cannot be made up in fantasy. I skipped the few things that I have done right, but they werent noteworthy. |
Aw you went ahead and posted it :)) |
Isnt there a rule in medecine that one can't treat/do operation on friends and family as the pression of failing is even higher ? |

Omega22. First of all, I think you were brave ;)
My parents are both vets and I assisted them many times during surgeries of pets and that's why I consider surgery an art.
I believe you now think this incident was your failure, but I think that especially thanks to the fact things went wrong, you will remember mistakes you did and you will avoid them in the future. As a final result, it will make you better doctor ;)
But I am curious what your friend told you? Did he cursed you and your offspring for 10 generations or did he bite his lips and acted like it doesn't hurt at all? :) |
So, u had a few beers BEFORE doing the the surgery right? That would explain it. ;) |
for Skunder:
They had a few beers, before, during and after the surgery :) |
Sadly the beers were after. Maybe they would help but I dont drive after beer.

It isnt a rule written, its just a suggestion. A very good suggestion though.
But I am curious what your friend told you?
As long as there were 8 other people looking, he was hero. Also after the mesocain injection, it didnt hurt at all. But he will punch me if the finger doesnt heal well. :-( |
please i dont need to do surgery to make a dummy out of myself ;) |
^^ It took a stitch to make any art ;) |
a stich in time saves nine:) |
doesn't sound too bad. stitches are flippin' hard! i'm a second year med student, and when we were learning how to do them no one could even tie down the stitches on a practice sleeve, let alone a real person.
i applaud your efforts! |
The finger is fine now. :-) |
ofcourse you're gonna say that :P get your friend on here so we can find out the truth! |
