It originated from a type of gang fight that gained prevalence in Paris where there would be 4 fighters from each gang, no weapons, all 4 had to submit for one gang to be decided the winner. It allowed territories to be sorted out but without the death rate and therefore police intervention of knife fights. | French for eights
