In scandinavish mifologi there are legends, that dwarfes are liviyn under the earth, and they could come up at night only, becouse if they will see a sunlight , they will became stone. (my english is not perfect )
There are some legends about alvs (elfs)
And there stand, that dwars are DARK ALVS (dark elfs!)

Yep, in scandinavian mythology dwarwes (or "zwergs", as they are also called) are dark elves, opposed to their light cousins "alves".
