I generally support browser games with real money, because I want the developers to put a-lot-of effort in it - and just to honor a good game - like this is one.
BUT if they wouldnt bring it in HARD (like that early building advantage), NO ONE would pay, no one. So I totally agree with this attitude.
I rather like to pay EUR 20 for a good browser game, which brings me fun for lets say 200+ hours, instead of paying like EUR 60 (plus EUR 12 monthly) for a unfinished bugged Age Of Conan - just to name one of the worst releases currently out there - or to pay EUR 50 for a game with 10 hours fun until its finished - THAT is commercial, no heroes. | Call me cynical, but recall the earlier discussions on Ammunition Points and how they ruined the game for .ru players. Am I the only one who suspects that within a few months, the Top 500 game will be limited to people who donate???

if you look at xinj(and probably there are others)he can now use incendiaries at lvl 6 which means that "donaters" will become much more powerful and have advantages | kotrin again has identified the problem beautifully...
i play another online game. played it for years (prolly 8 years i guess), there are a few thousand players, but not a huge amount... you can donate there, and you get some great server stats, different calculators for battles, this and that... helpful tools to make the interface better. this is fine and good. over 50% of those who play, pay... it is cheap, and the perks arent that important, but it is a sign of gratitude to those who put in the effort. a none paying player is 100% as able to compete as any other, and that is the critical point.
i have seen games where the top players are the donators. and that is an instant put off. i have NEVER played one such game for more than a month. to see this game going the very same way, is so disheartening. i feel i have put in many hours, and brain time while at and while away from the comp. to just walk away now is a real shame.
entice donators with some perks, by all means. let them have some gold maybe, that is only mildly unfair. give them better graphics, and faster EXP gain speed - at least that just means the top 100 is sacrificed to the payers, but those who arent after prestige can continue to play down where they have fun. but to be this unbalancing... truly unfortunate. my battle history is my pride mark. i got that by strategy and knowledge. but not even the most adept free player can compete with an average player, who has donated to gain power. this is the point where the educated, descerning players head for the door, and the "simple" kids who cant win fairly start crying to their mothers for money.

Imagine chess match where someone has more units... Summarizing: everything with diamonds is ok but possibility to have upgraded units earlier is not ok. I can't even counter that with RL money, because if i upgrade it too, i would be in some battles against people who have normal units, such matches are no fun for me. This is just paying for one's hobby, like you pay in a movie theatre or in an internet cafe or a music concert and so on. It's not only Russians who have to consider the necessity to invest in an online game. Have to? Nonsense. I'm quite satisfied with my lvl 9 non-donating character on .ru | Whine whine whine, gripe whine. Ok so that summed up 90% of the first 79 posts, and yes I know this is an open forum for people to give their opinions, but one calls it as they see it. Those who gave their opinions or suggested alternative ways to go about this - kudos to you, you're being apart of the solution.
To the rest, listen people, as was stated by a few level-headed people thus far, the developers have created a great product/project and have the right to charge for its services. To those who have openly decided to 'walk away' from Heroes I offer my greatest luck in finding a game that is not only fun but also meets your need to starve the developers. They could (as many other games have done) simply say that if you want to play you pay first and that's that. But they didn't. You can still play the game as you are now without cost, there is always the "No diamonds" description option for battles, and what's more, the game will be advancing in other ways to make you feel more "at ease". I say give the creator his due, and continue enjoying the game for what it is. |
