Author | How much does Attack/Defense really help? |
Does anyone know how much attack and defense helps? Because I removed all of my artifacts and fought and didn't notice any damage difference.
If anyone knows the formula it would be much appreciated. |
I was wondering the same exact thing. Thanks for asking it first Striker |
I think it needs to rely on chance for it to increase. |
Attack defence really make a difference.
IF attack > defence
Damage bonus is: 5% * (Attack - Defence)
IF defence > Attack
Damage reduction is: 5% * (Defence - Attack)
As knight i have an high defence, and you can have trouble taking out my swordsmen with 20 defence point without attack bonus. |
Posted by Arctic in the top help thread:
Attack and defense parameters influence damage dealt (and taken). The exact formula for physical damage is:
-IF Attacker's attack>= Defenders' defense:
D=Rnd(min,max)*N*(1-0.03*M)*[1+0.05(Attack-Defense)]
-IF attack<defense:
D=Rnd(min,max)*N*(1-0.03M)/[1+0.05(Defense-Attack)]
D-damage
Rnd(min,max)-random integer of the min-max damage interval
N-number of creatures in stack
M-mutual faction skill (i.e.: What level of the enemy faction's racial skill does the defender possess. http://www.heroeswm.com/forum_messages.php?tid=1832233 ) |
clarification:
we said the same thing, i just wrote it the easy way :) |
not quite the same, because the Arctics formula as quoted by MiyabiDoll also includes racial skill levels, because for example playing as a mage with 1 skill level of elf against an elf reduces the damage the elf does to you by 3 percent (3% per racial skill level) |

yeap :)
I think attack > defence is more straight-forward, 5% more damage per point of difference. 20 more attack = 100% more damage.
When defense > attack, 20 points higher defense doesn't reduce the damage 100% though. It only reduces damage by 50%. |

I don't agree with this conclusion. "attack" and "defense" are equally important :)
At least "+1 defense == -1 enemy's attack", isn't it true from the equations?
In other words, a player with +10 attack makes the same damages when fighting with another player with +10 defense... |
hmm you can never get the damage to be 0 no matter what your defence, unless it's in the hundreds and damge dealt is under 10 |

zea you are absolutely right :) I've seen Knights with very high defense dominate in group battles. 30+ Swordsmen and 10 griffins with close to 30 defense were almost unstoppable.
What I meant to stress, was that the formula does not reduce damage to 0 at +20 defense difference. Numerically it has a diminishing return. |

That is true.
Personally, I think factions with a high initiative army should have higher attack, while the factions with a low initiative army may consider adding defense.
My swordsmen are very slow, they sometimes get attacked twice before they can attack others, so for me, adding defense is more interesting. However, griffins are really quick units. This somehow makes it hard to decide.
Any suggestion? "half attack half defense?" :) |
i think griffins will deal a lot of damage by themself and thanks to the "unlimited retaliations" they can deal even greater if they stand more thanks to an higher defence. So i absolutely prefer full defence plus morale. |
If I'd play knight, I'd go full defense escorted griffins.
attack skill influences hero damage not as much as i had hoped with my barbarian (the damage range of my hero with 12 attack is the same as of a knight with 6 attack, as i saw recently in a group battle, but in effect i deal a little more damage (1-2 on each hit) because of the higher attack skill.)
Thus, the escort attack for 150% hero damage and the unlimited retaliation of the griffin make it a real nuisance, especially in combination with full defense (and later on def/vitality). you opponents will prefer shooting them, thus saving your and your teammates ranged units much grief... |
