Bowmen get hit 1st true, but even a big stack of recruits doesn't have the hp to last a battle in the front lines. They usually get one hit before the become virtually useless. You can argue that recruit's stun is more useful than having bowmen, and there is some truth to that, but from my experience having 50 recruits is only a bit more efficient than having 4.
My suggestion is try! =) Experiment with different amounts, and in different stack formations. I'd suggest having stacks of 10+ recruits, so they all have a shot at attacking more than once, and to draw some fire from your main units. Maybe it'll work =) But it depends heavilly on the type of battle.
Of course, I'm still a bit of a newbie in this, and I'm sure there are much more educated opinions around. | | Ive found that having a good mix works well,but maxing out swords and griffens are a must,but I do prefer recruits over bowmen,my line up is 11 griffins,32swords,12 bows,2 stacks of 6,and 27 recruits, 3 stacks of 9. |
