basilisk was from dark-elves, if i remember, and they also had a "killer-cow" :P or something on lvl 4 or lvl 5

HoMM3's swamp Fortress faction has the Greater Basilisk and Mighty Gorgon, which have petrify and death stare abilities, those black mighty Gorgon are probably the "killer-cow" you are referring to. |
