AuthorCriticism Wanted
I'll be the first to admit that I pretty much suck at battles. So tell me where I'm going wrong here.

Here is me getting crushed by some Rogues (46).

And here are three examples of better wizards at the same level taking on about the same amount of Rogues.

Rogues (57) -- http://www.heroeswm.com/warlog.php?warid=470509125
Rogues (47) -- http://www.heroeswm.com/warlog.php?warid=469282645
Rogues (43) -- http://www.heroeswm.com/warlog.php?warid=468191440

So obviously the first thing I'm not getting and see used against me a lot is the splitting of the troops into smaller units. I've tried that tactic and must not be using it right becuase it seems I just get killed quicker when I try. If anyone would like to explain that to me I'd be greatful.

You see anything else? I'm open to any criticisms you might have.

Thanks.
I'm no wizard myself but first of I would split off as many gargs as possible (e.g. 4x1 and 1x14) and then you should not use the golem to block only but instead you could have attacked 1 stack first with a single garg, and then with the golems and the other 14 gargs as well and u still would have had 3 single stacks to save your engeneers for 1 further round.

If they finally break through then you should probably move 1 garg as far away as possible so u can have 1 more round in the end for your hero to do dmg.
Change troops according to the enemy: your gremlin engineers die in one hit,in this battle they are useless and block all other troops + gargoyles have more HP.

Use stacks of 1 to attack first, then attack that enemy with all stacks (unless that stack can be killed with your weaker troops). They won't retaliate after the first attack (except griffins). Using the wait button with your big stacks can make a huge difference.

Get 7 stacks, more stacks = more turns to kill your troops = more blockers = more magic attacks.

Kill an enemy stack if it can hit one of your stacks before a more powerful enemy stack. It can steal your retaliation.

Gargoyles have rage: if one of your stacks dies, they get +1 attack: 6 dead stacks = +6 attack. Keep them alive.
First of all the other wizards in the fights you linked use mini artifacts and/or gear. That makes a huge difference.
The biggest problem of your strategy is the fact that you are using your troops to protect gremlins, while gremlins are too weak to deliver enough damage to kill that amount of rogues.
You should adjust your recruiting towards higher amounts of gargoyles/golems and less gremlins in general.
Regarding the gargoyle splitting in stacks of 1 + 1 stack with the rest, that will not only make sure you will avoid retaliation on important stacks, but it will also mean that the big stack of gargoyles will increase its attack rating when the stacks of 1 die , due to the rage ability. Every time one of your stacks dies ( 1 unit stacks ) they gain 1 attack for the remainder of the combat.
And of course using artifacts + mini -artifacts makes a huge difference.
This is very helpful. I didn't really understand how rage worked and I've yet to use the wait button. I shall learn.

I had picked up on the "one troop attack gets rid of retailiation" tactic but with the low initative factor of my troops I hadn't really pulled it off too well. Maybe I'd do better with that tactic in hunts as I'm dealing with just one initative level rather than multiple. I'll figure it out.

And what I'm hearing is it's better to take out a whole stack instead of attacking the stack with the most troops (assuming the same kind of troop) because of the retaliation tactic.

As far as the mini-arts go I was thinking I'd just suffer without them for a while and save the money for when I can do the double mini-arts. Same general principle with artifacts in general. Guess I should spend the gold on a super-set of some kind for these difficult hunts.

Thanks everyone.
You should make normal mini-arts already and when you are ready for double mini-arts you can dismantle the ones you already have - you get back 90% of the gold you spent to make them.
Trust me they will help shitloads.
Especially a defense mini-art on your gargoyles will make sure you gain extra time to cast all your spells in fights before your troops die. It will make a huge difference.
