The Chronicler's Daughter

AuthorThe Chronicler's Daughter
This is a story of love, hate, envy, and jealousy. With twists and turns that will leave you wondering what will happen next. This story is told by none other than someone who lived through it personally: me, Lexi Green. I was raised by a man named Skunder. Skunder found me in an abandoned house about 2 days after a raid had taken place. I was only 5 years old when that happened. He was investigating what had attacked and was tracking them down when he found me. He gave up the search to take care of me, for that I will be ever grateful. From there he raised me like his own daughter. He taught me everything I know. My story starts the day Skunder got a promotion 17 years after this happened.

I stood in the kitchen preparing mine and Skunder’s lunch when I heard a frantic rapping on the door. I hurriedly went to the door, ready to defend myself if I had to. I opened the door and a page with the Empire’s emblem on his chest was doubled over on the doorstep.
“Who are you?” I asked the page in a curious tone.
“Madam, my name is naught of import. Is the hero Skunder here?” he replied in a scared tone. That’s when I realized I had a flaming ball of fire in my hand.
“Oh sorry about that!” I said in an apologetic tone. “I’ll go and fetch him from his study. You can come in and make yourself at home.” Skunder was always in his study when he wasn’t sharing his vast knowledge he gained throughout the years with me. Now that I think about it, I have no idea how old Skunder is. He still looks like he is pretty young, but looks can be deceiving.
I hurried to Skunder’s study and he was already at the door ready to come down.
“Oh, Lexi, I didn’t hear you coming. I was just on my way down to give you another task.” He said like he was actually surprised.
“Well this page really looks like he needs you. So hurry up!” I said in a casual tone, not even bothering to look at him.
We went back to the kitchen and found the page stuffing his face with muffins and ale. He finished shortly after he began and began telling us of the peril the Empire was in. Only he was brief and skipped the details.
“The Empire is being attacked by hordes of various monsters! The Empress requires your presence immediately!” The page blurted without even taking one breath in between sentences.
“Well then, I guess I will have to take you with me to the Empire, Lexi.” Skunder said with false enthusiasm. He knew I hated cities with a passion. I preferred the silence and peaceful quite of the forests. I had only been to the Empire once, and that was to buy some materials I would need for my studies.
“Do I really need to be there?” I said with a hint of acid in my voice.
“No, but you know I like to keep an eye on you at all times. We can’t have you blowing up the forest experimenting with magic like you always do.”
“Dang it! You know I won’t enjoy this in the least.”
With out swords on our hips and bows on our backs we set out as fast as elves can go. Skunder carried the page on his back without breaking a sweat. I carried all the bags in a sack that I enchanted to follow me on the way to the Empire. We made good time and Skunder asked me to stay in our quarters for tonight. That made me even angrier. So I decided I would find a party to go to and at least try to have fun.
There happened to be no parties going on in the outskirts of town and I defiantly wasn’t going downtown. So I decided I would just go to the local tavern to have some fun.
When I arrived there were hardly any people there and I just made conversation with a couple people and the bartender. A few minutes later, a local musician troupe walked in and started playing. I knew none of the songs they played.
Just then a man no older than 20 came in; I could not take my eyes off of him. He had straight blonde hair and a tan that fit him perfectly. He was muscular, even for an elf. He was about 5’10” maybe 5’11” and he was the most gorgeous elf I have
He was about 5’10” maybe 5’11” and he was the most gorgeous elf I have ever seen. All the other girls seemed to notice him too. I just couldn’t keep my eyes off him, then he looked in my direction and laughed. It was then that I realized I looked at him like he was a piece of meat. I blushed and looked away. Then I started to gain some confidence and I went to turn around and talk to him, but he was already gone.
I only stayed at the tavern a couple more minutes then I left to go back to my quarters. I guess I didn’t realize what time it was because when I got back, Skunder was waiting with impatience on the only chair in the room.
“And where have you been Lexi Green? I started to get worried about you. I can’t leave you for two hours without you disobeying my orders.” His voice never rose when he talked to me. It was worse that way, it made me feel even guiltier.
“I was just out having some fun at the tavern, geez do you really have to know where I am all the time?” Amazingly my voice didn’t raise either/
“I just don’t want anything to happen to you. There are plenty more dangers here than in our forest home.”
“Look, I’m sorry. I was just bored and I wanted to do something. Besides I think you know I can look after myself.” I really was sorry and he seemed to accept my apology.
“OK. Anyway, guess who you’re looking at.” Skunder said with a smug expression on his face.
“Umm an old man that amazingly hasn’t had a brain hemorrhage?” I replied with playful tone in my voice.
He laughed, “Nope you’re staring at the Empires new Imperial Chronicler.”
“Wow, really? I never would have guessed that.” And I meant that too. I seriously never would have guessed it. Then it sunk in. I was going to have to stay in town for a long time. At least until this war was over. I tried to see if it was a good thing or bad thing. The good was that I might see that man again. The bad was that I would have to live a city life.
TO BE CONTIUED….
