During at least one or two combats, I raised vampires. My hero always raised 5 vampires prior to this. Now, all of a sudden, sometimes my hero only raises 3 or 4. Why the change from raise to raise? Does it have something to do with raising after the entire stack is dead vs raising before the entire stack is defeated?

In a way, yes. You can't raise any more than you have... So they can't go above 5 in that battle.
I watched that battle, and at first you raised 5, since they were all dead, and later you only raised 3, because 2 were already alive. | It's what Agelage said. But just to to add to the discussion, the raise also has to heal the hitpoints of any alive stack to full before the rest of the points is applied to raising dead units in the stack. Just like the vamps own Drain ability, so you won't always get 5.
And the raise calcualtions uses the unit's ORIGINAL hitpoints and not the new max hitpoints of the stack to do calculations as to how many are raised. (ie, the vamps are always counted as 30 hit max creatures for the number that can be raised, not their current max due to the raise, like 24 after 1 raise or 19 after 2) | | But that does make any sense. Any other time, I've always raised 5. And even by the formula stated on the spells page....HP resurrected = 120 + 15*Spell Power for no talent. Which means it should be raising 135 HP for spell power 1. 135 HP give 4 vampires (120 HP) + 15 HP in the 5th. Or, heal the one that's injured below 15 HP and give 4 more...Wait, did I start with 5? I thought I started with 7 that battle. Maybe I should check that. But I know there was a battle where I started with 7, had 2 and it only raised 4. I think I need to go searching through my battles... | | If you have 2 vampires, with the second one below 15 hp, you raise 4 of them (with 1 spellpower) if you have 2 vampires with the second vampire above 15 hp, you raise 5 vampires (but the last one has very little hp) |
