Don't get me wrong, I've got a good amount of environmentalist in me... but Earth Hour is honestly not a proper protest, nor is it a solution of any sort. People assume that if you use less electricity that less resources will be wasted. This is not the way it works. Barring major natural disasters or power failures (example: East coast blackout five or so years back), facilities are never above 50% capacity. In fact, they generally run at a certain rate very consistently, regardless of power usage. The only facilities that are ever effected on a regular basis are those that we are not concerned with (i.e. wind, solar, and hydro). This is mainly because the latter three run inconsistently anyways.
So my point here is that despite you going out of your way to save energy, you really didn't save anything other than your personal appliances' ware. I don't meant to burst your proud moment and self-induced feeling of doing your part; but I have to remain realistic on the point. It's good to participate to show you have the capacity... but there are far better ways to show your support.
Then again, to play on the other side of the argument, the only realistic way for _everyone_ to do anything all involve using less gasoline and other petroleum products (this includes petroleum jelly for all you Vaseline fans!)
And to remain totally to the point of this thread I'll post what I did:
I chilled here with three lamps on in my otherwise unlit apartment bumming around online for the last 12 hours (of which one must have been Earth Hour; I wasn't paying attention). |

Dont worry, we have a law that we cant switch off the car lights when driving for the safety reasons. So it is ok anyway. :-) |

I went to the arcade to play a few games to jibe at the dumb idea of Earth Hour.
To contradict myself, my PC was switched off for the equivalent amount of time as well :) |
