You have only fought one duel so don't give up yet!
I don't know much about the elf faction, but one think i can suggest is to split your faeries so the other player will have to waste turns killing them while your forestkeepers get closer. Your last opponent was clever, splitting his gargoyles and attacking with one gargoyle so then you couldnt retaliate when the other gargoyles attacked. Learn from your failures as well as your successes. Practice different tactics with hunts.
Study each faction and their troops to learn what their strengths and weaknesses are.
I think another elf might be able to give you better ideas too.
