Took these two as examples, you should be able to win those even if you'd blindly charged in all your troops.
A pair of ring of doubts alone you wore almost cost 350 gold per battle - If you bought them from the facility, then sell them back to Empire when they are worn. Hunter artifacts are "luxuries". (I don't remember when was the last time I wore even a single piece)
When there are artifact sets (enough to meet AP requirement) that cost only around 100 gold per battle.
Thing is, not all combats have same difficulty, you should evaluate first, then decide if you need more than just a min AP set. (Lots of times, you won't need anything equipped) | here will give you basic tips in easy word they may be repeated time and tide again and again but still hammering them in is the key in this game as you tend to forget obvious things many a time...
1. enroll max
2. at your level inspect --> difficulty of HG , MG , TG use

understand what is min ap some tiems you get ap cheaper than normal by looking for good deals use H Mh arts if they give more ap for lesser money
3. enroll 10 times and then fight once to get off the work a holic penalty
that one combat can be Hunt merc quest or thief combat
but that depends upon where you need to use less arts and get max gold
4. besides that no matter how tempting don't gamble in roulette
5. don't buy useless arts the less arts in your invent the better
6. don't bet in the tavern
7. when possible buy diamonds with real money
8. try for winining tourneys with least money spent atleast come in top 10
9. jump into the market only if you have the capacity to and some brains in marketing and selling. Try to make max profit but don't go for a high profit on selling an item if it won't get sold for ages then it is a liability
