Sure, go ahead and try the ST without gating :)
But with a low faction level you will never win the ST, because apart from the unique racial abilities a higher faction level also gives more attack / defence and initiative. And that is also really important for most factions.
For example with 1% extra initiative, my hell horses will get +0.2 initiative |

| It will always hurt switching to a different faction, so moving to DE will result in less wins than your main. However, it will be less bad than if you switched to most other factions. |
