when i was in a battle(hunting asistance) my allie told me to take retal with farmers(weakest unit) and hit with stronger units (SM and griffins)
How does that do me any good?

Yeah, unless it's a unlimited relation unit, like ur griff can do retaliation ever time it get attacked, but most units don't have it, so yeah.
Take retal with weak stack, and youre free to attack without retal problem. |
Any kind of creature/enemy/troops in this game always give you one retailation (or unlimited retailation such as modern golems).
It's important when you faces a huge number of enemy troops in one stack. Take retal with the weakest one so that the stronger unit will be able to deal damage without getting hit by the enemy.
For example :
There is one stack of 100 skeletons. You have 1 stack of 1 farmer and 1 stack of 5 griffins. If you hit 100 skeletons directly with your griffins, griffins will do some damage and retal by the rest of the skeletons so that all of your griffins will be killed. But the condition is different if you hit the skeletons with 1 farmer then with 5 griffins. 1 farmer will be killed because of the retal and 5 griffin will be safe.

| dont do this to griffins and some units which have unlimited retaliation.They will attack everytime you hit. |
