You'll get more defense in battles depending on your spell power and knowledge.
Post #6 in simpler words-
Additional Defense = (Knowledge+Spell Power) * ([10 + DE Racial level]) / 100)

Look at Loricia's Defence. Its 26 in the battle, but if you look at her char page, it was just 18.
Just think that if you're raising you spell power and knowledge, you're getting higher defence too. |
