no, it never had 1 defence. otherwise this (upgraded one): https://www.lordswm.com/art_info.php?id=mm_staff would not be any better

and it would have been actually better than this one https://www.lordswm.com/art_info.php?id=mif_staff which is for lvl 9 (since no caster cares for attack anyways)
