they can be useful to remove retaliation for lizards/minotaurs (rogues till lvl 6/8).
in pvp - either they have the same function or they are used by a might-DE (which is rare) in greater numbers to poison weak shooters (like elven bowmen).
they are of great value for warlocks, because they increase the total army`s hp and are able to poison enemies. |

| for retaliation - minimal, if you`re a warlock - maximal. obvious. |

you just have to decide - where you need rogues/minos/lizards in full numbers and where you might have to use poisoners. if you decide so, you`ll have to replace troops. for example - you sacrifice 1 mino and get instead 1 rogue and 1 poisoner. this poisoner can be useful in some situations, where you don`t want to rush with lizards/minos and lose them.
for warlocks, because you need more `meat` to withstand attacks.
but again, it`s up to you. you can replace them by rogues, but rogues are no shooters/have less total hp + they cannot traverse the battlefield in one turn without `tactics`/morale. it means - they are dead, if the enemy has range troops. |

| Personally I used them at lvl 5 and won easily with my cornering tactic but after lvl 6 I lost all use of them except for retal taking. |

better save the money for lvl 8 (shrews/hydras are quite expensive + you will use them during the entire game).
if you have some surplus money, concerning you will be a magic-DE/do a lot of hunts - then buy them. |
