I actually can understand the fact that if some traveller walks through the locations I have set for ambush, I can catch him. But how does it work with AI caravan? I mean how do we actually catch them? Does the game randomly provides us with the ambush when it likes?
In my opinion it works this way:
The system process all the travellers between location where you have set ambush and then it decide whether you catch a caravan or player - if there is only 1 player travelling and he is not of your level (before the merge it was +-1 of your level), you definitely get caravan, if he is your level, the battle triggers with him. However maybe there is some probability that even when he is your level, you will get caravan or get nothing (?) but I don't think so.
If there are more travelers, let's say 1 of your level and 5 +-1 of your level, the chance to catch caravan could be 5:6 and the chance to catch the player 1:6...
I am not sure it works this way, it's just like I understand that.
Also don't forget there are some conditions for travelling players - they must have at least 40% of their live restored, they can't be in the same MC... In the case player of your level doesn't pass this conditions, I guess you can catch caravan instead of him (e.g. he is your level, he is not in the same MC but he has restored only 20% of life). I am really sure whether player from the same MC can trigger your ambush and so you get caravan but before the merge it seemed like it worked that way. Anyway, there it is not important as you don' have to wait for ages for ambush triggering.

if a player travels between the two locations you set an ambush, there is a small chance (lets say 5%) that you catch the player, and a much larger chance you catch a caravan.
So if no one travels between those two locations, you cant catch a caravan either (this is what happened before the merge all the time.....)
