Aswang is a general term used to describe something monstrous that you don't know exactly. It is also the term used for those who changes form from human to animal.
aswang = general term used to describe those who change forms.
manananggal = the one in your picture. I don't think there is an english version of this. can split her body in half
bampira = vampire
mangkukulam, mambabarang = witches (depending on specialties)
tiyanak = something like a monster baby.
tik-tik = an aswang with long tongue. victimizes pregnant women.
And then we have the maligno and enkantada and engkanto which includes the duwendes, kapres or tikbalangs, diwatas, nuno sa punso.
And the sea creatures sirena (mermaid) and syokoy (mermen). The most famous mermaid is dyesebel.
The philippines has hundreds of dialects and was occupied by the spanish for hundreds of years. This leads to some information being lost in translation. We also have chinese and indian influences in our culture and folklores. |
