Minor Tournament

AuthorMinor Tournament
Kalirosh became familiar with a missive he had just received from the Court. The warlord was summoning him to his presence immediately. He remarked the slight harshness and some sort of detachment in the wordings of the message from Grammith, compared to the warlord’s usual style. The knight assumed that for whatever reason he was summoned, it ought to be something bigger and more grievous than usual. Grammith’s mind was clearly fully occupied with a problem, and Kalirosh felt proud to be called upon to address it.

Less than a quarter of an hour passed as Kalirosh dismounted his charger, hastily shaking the dust off his vest. He quickly made his way into the Palace, passing between the guardsmen saluting him. As he approached the Council hall, his keen ear caught an echo of the conversation taking place within.
“But this is important! We have to make this known!” Abu-Bakir’s voice appeared so troubled that Kalirosh unconsciously grew still in front of the door, with his hand inches away from the handle. Grammith’s reply sounded heavy and firm “No. That is too much risk. No one may know yet, for as long as…”

Not wishing to become an eavesdropper, Kalirosh quickly pressed the door producing a loud creak and stamped his heels at the floor several times to bring out his presence. His entry sank the conversation; Abu-Bakir cast down his eyes, his brows knit and his face solemn. Kalirosh greeted the two with a silent nod.
“Sire Kalirosh! I was expecting you”, the warlord welcomed him with deliberate cordiality. “I shall be happy if you agree to assist me in organizing a Minor Tournament”, Grammith continued, taking a scroll bearing the Empress’ seal and handing it over to his deputy.

“This is an honour”, Kalirosh replied, taking grip on the scroll and glancing the two over, expecting continuation. An awkward silence gave him to understand that his expectation was vain, and he bowed turning away and heading back towards the door.
Something was clearly going on; the warlord and the Court wizard were up to something they didn’t wish to expand on… Or was he perhaps supposed to display his concern better to earn participation? Engrossed in doubt, Kalirosh stopped not far from the door, turned around and asked: “Is there anything else I should know about, Sire Grammith?”
The kind smile vanished from Grammith’s face. He exchanged a brief look with the wizard and spoke crossly: “That’s it for now. I thank you, Kalirosh!”
