1. Give the option of a partner controlling that person's units during the duration of the battle. Auto-defeating the player spoils the game and wastes a lot of time during battles that can last over an hour.
2. Sound a warning when it's time to setup units. I think a lot of players join a battle late because they don't realize it has started.

Uh.. there is an option to have "Your turn" sound enabled in Personal settings.
Personal settings -> Sound Setting -> "Your turn" sound in combat <check the box>
