Tavern card games

AuthorTavern card games
Hi everyone. I wanted to have somebody else's opinion about this.

The thing is I've been playing some card games in the tavern, and they seem to be interesting and fun, but the randomness of certain situations just caught my attention, sometimes you find yourself completely denied by the other player, others you win very easily, and other times the game can take more than 15 minutes to end.

So, my question is, do you think there is any SKILL INVOLVED in tavern games? Since you have no idea of which cards you get and which the other player has, and you are restricted by the Barracks, Mines n Monastery's resources when it comes to plat cards.
If you think there is actually any "Tactic" which you use when playing I'd be grateful to read it btw.

And thanks in advance.
there are players that make millions on tavern games,i doubt they win it all just because of luck
Of course skill is necessary. When I play against low level GG guys, I usually win. Sometimes inexperienced players play cards that are profiting only me :P
There are some common tactics to be careful about. Generally, you'll have to guess what the enemy has in his possession. There are many specific tactics though.

RESOURCES
For example, playing cards that damage the enemy's resources can disable his movements, so try to make the enemy's resources be low, this means if you have a card that does -1 to enemy mine or barracks, play it, or if you have the card "-1 to all mines" and your mine is higher than your enemy's, usually it's good to play it. Same applied for monastery, if you have a high monastery, play that card that does -1 to all monasteries. Also, if you have a card that makes your source equal to your enemy's and a card that lowers your source to give you something else, you can combine those to if it suits you. If you have an income higher than your enemy's it's usually good to play cards that waste both players' resources, so if your enemy has mine 1 and ore 8 and you have a higher mine, play that card "-8 ore to both players", it will disable your enemy more than you.

WALL
In general, try to have a wall higher than your enemy's, but never too high. Beware of cards that take advantage of your lower wall, like "-1 barracks to player with lowest wall". If you have a too high wall, don't play cards that make your wall bigger, keep them in case the enemy uses switch wall. If you have "Switch wall" card, make your wall as big as you want. If your wall is at 0, make sure you raise it before raising your tower, your wall is your defense, you don't want to receive pure damage on your tower.

TOWER
Make sure to keep it high enough so that the enemy can't destroy you with direct damage. The highest direct damage on tower in one card is 12, so always keep it above 12. You also need to make sure the enemy doesn't go too high and win. Usually people play large tower cards last, like Dragon eye and that other card that gives +15 tower, so make sure if your enemy has lots of mana, or he is saving mana to 21, then he is planning to use dragon eye.

LOOK AT YOUR ENEMY'S RESOURCES
Plan ahead your enemy's movements. Enemy is gathering 25 or 18 stacks, he is planning to attack with dragon or pegasus. Enemy with low wall is gathering 17 ore, he is planning to switch walls. Enemy who persists on lowering your wall, probably wants to play a card with effect on lower wall.

GENERAL
If you manage to completely disable the enemy's mine, make sure to make his ore storage be lower than 2, so he can't use any card that increases his mine. If you can't play any card, discard the card with "play again" feature. If you don't have any "play again", discard the one that would take the most turns to use. If your enemy has low wall/tower, keep damaging him as long as you can.

Hope these help.
The combo I hate most is at first round, when the enemy has "damage + play again" or "wall + play again" and the card "-1 barracks to player with lowest wall". lol
Yes, there is skill. There are player who can get 55-60% win rate consistently and get huge profits in the long term, and vice versa.

Read this thread here, some good tips made by different posters
https://www.lordswm.com/forum_messages.php?tid=2089798

The skills generally involve anticipating your opponent's cards and planning your win condition.

Although, only the empire capital rules (and maybe east river) are significantly affected by skill. The other types are too long which causes more impact on lucky draws.
Let me repost some of the tips I posted on the thread above:

- There are lots of different situations that have different choices, the card game is mostly about how to read different situations and choosing the right card each time (and, also about your luck :p)

- If your monastery is higher than your opponent's, then it might be good to use dissension (-1 to both monasteries, -7 to both towers)
the reduction in monastery will affect the opponent more since there's a higher percentage of reduction in his monastery
- Same concept applies for initiation (+1 to both mines, you got 4 mana) and full moon (+1 to both barracks, you got 3 stacks)
if your mine/barracks is lower than your opponent's, then it's probably good to use it

-Usually, if i have enough tower cards to win the game but without enough mana, i'll calculate the minimum amount of turns required to win, and make sure i didn't go above that amount. (e.g, need 5 turns to obtain the mana required to use 2 tower cards that will give the victory, so use one of the tower card on 4th turn, and use the second on 5th turn)
-Of course, most of the time my tower will get damaged before i reach the finish and therefore need to make adjustment to my plan. So, in between those turns, i also try to maximise my defense to minimise the chance of my tower gets depleted

- If you got a +monastery/mine in the first turn, you might want to wait 1-2 turn before using it in case your opponent have a parity or steal tech card.
- Might as well see if your opponents are using any +monastery/mine cards or not in the first few turns, if they do then usually they dont have the parity/steal tech card
Skill is roughly as important as luck. The average player, or slightly better than average will have higher than 50% win ratio, but will loose gold thanks to Empire tax.

It really takes a skilful player to both overcome the Empire tax and the luck to actually make money out of it. But yeah, clever playing will allow you to win more often than you will loose.

Easier way to find out is to play against high gambler level players, and I bet that you will quickly start running a deficit :)
