It depends each tourney. IIRC around the end of 2009(christmas and new year) we had that with tier 6 and 2010 we had it with tier 7. Those were the only two I remember actually... might have been others.

Throne battles were used to test new creatures. When tier 5 upgrades came out, throne battle was dominated by dark elves (hydras OP), tier 6, I dont know, and tier 7 was dominated by dark elves and elves because dragons. barbarians were strong too. Since skeletal dragons are weaker, necros had more of them.
I asked arctic about throne battles, he said that their only purpose is to test new creatures. So if we dont get any new creatures, we dont get any thrones battles:( |
hmmm... then maybe as excuse for rebalancing? due to the new factions and the alt creatures?
And even if admins do not need to collect data, it would probably be an event for which less work is required... and if the players think it is fun... then why not? |

How does any other tier 7 beat ancient behemoth in 1v1? In my games until now whenever a tier 7 from another faction hits my behemoth, they get rekt :D |
