me: full artifact (39-28) and 16% damage enchantment - knight:9 & dwarf:5

opponent: artifact (23-10) and +40% damage enchantment - dwarf:10 & knight:4

Because he is dwarf and he has an opportunity for better settlement as he is the thief. There is nothing bad about that, he can do a lot of damage due to his enchants before you can do anything.
I was also doing ambushes with 1 enchated weapon (5x8) and I always won in PvP ambushes even though my enemies were in full arts and I used only that 1 enchated eapon + 2def shield...
i think that this "runes" story, is making him a superhero... i didnt have a chance to move.
who else except dwarf can do all these things with the first move? reach everywhere (so the otherone cant hide, while he takes your retaliations or make range units useless), give multiple hits and the 2 out of three makes the enemy useless by loosing his turn (the bears gave hits to everyone they were in touch and the 2 of 3 was knockbacks!).
i've played all races but none can achive all these superhero things
no matter the enchantments, there is no race that can win so easy someone (when his attack was 23 and my defence 28 !!!), without even having a chance to make my moves.
He ignored some defense, don't forget about that.
As I wrote, ambushes are absolutely different story, it is very different format for PvP, can't be compared with e.g. CG duels... And thus you can't find a balance there

for Neronas:
Your crossbow could have killed dreadbanes with aimed shot.
You could've dived on the spearmans with griffins, the besekers were unable to reach your swordmens if they weren't knocked back, after the griffin's diving you would be abled to use them to fight the dreadbane, bears, beserkers with the rest of your army rather than simply throwing one unit out.
You should've put your swords at 7:10, that way they would retaliatle and the beserkers won't be abled to reach em on their first turn.
As murali said, aimed shot on dreadbanes would've been better.

Most important advices. Let's talk about your build.
You're a CL 13 knight with FSL 9, so you know very well how slow this faction is and how easily countered by faster factions it's. (if played correctly) That means that you'll require tons of defense in order to survive the first blows and then start your game.
So 1- switch all your points from attack and replace them on defense.
2 - Get advanced leadership + fervor + advanced defense.

With those tips above, you could've still lost, however it would have been a closer fight in overal.

Final note, 24% extra elemental damage from weapon, makes a huge difference.
This game is all about stats and when it comes from enchanted damage, it is simply better than raw stats.
