Author | Interview with Maxim - The Highlights |
HWM Daily has published a Russian transcript of the interview with Maxim on HWM Radio. Below is a post of all the most interesting / seemingly important parts of the interview. The interview is a good way to gauge what the Admins have been working on, as well as their various thoughts about the state of the game and ideas that the players have.
Hopefully nothing is lost in translation ;)
• Planned changes to CG. They want to give players a success rating based on their previous CG performances. Similar to what they have in the old blindfold tournaments. That way they can match players according to success and levels, rather than just matching by levels. Maxim talks about putting a banner on the field which will indicate your rating. The idea is that you will be able to listen to the player who is more "tactical".
• In the coming month, the admins hope to complete the preparation work for dedicated weeks in the game. Different weeks will have different themes / challenges. Once completed, you will receive a reward. They want to line up a good 6 months’ worth of “weeks” before implementing them. However, work is well underway and Maxim expects them to be introduced within the month.
• They are working on a third campaign. Bar any difficulties, this should be released in the coming month. When the campaign is introduced, there will be no extension to the AG table. It is possible that they may extend the guild table when the fourth campaign is introduced, however Maxim says that they realise players do not get much replay value out of doing the same campaign over and over with different factions and classes and that they would rather do new campaigns. They want to aim so that you do not have to play the same campaign more than 3 times on the highest difficulty, so that you may only have to play it with your three favourite factions.
• More on campaigns: The game auto balances the campaigns as they are played. So where too many players have been winning one battle, that battle increases its difficulty. Where players are putting on all these fancy sets, the battle difficulty has been slowly scaling up. The admins have requested that some players point out these battles that are very hard to do in full rare sets so that they may be rebalanced. By logic, when the battle gets harder and all the players are putting on rare sets, the battles are easily won and they get harder yet again. "Maybe with balancing something is wrong or something else, but the goal is not to make the battle impassable for the balancer. Rather, on the contrary, if the battle is too simple, it increases its complexity, but not to such an extent that it can not be passed."
So it is best when a new campaign is released to do it early. The battles are all designed to be passed in shop arts at the start. Even if they release the next one in Russian before it is translated to English, (as they seem to do), get in there while the difficulty is fresh! | • Maxim is going to reconsider the scaling of Monster Quests in MG. Rather than have them scale up in {3} they may lower the rate of increase or change the stats of the monsters.
• In the next month they will revise the difficulty coefficients of the caravans for TG. Dwarf will no longer have it so easy! It is intended to make all factions face a similar difficulty. They will further make changes to TG by adding alt-classes as heroes in the caravans, so there is greater diversity with the likes of TDE and Charmer elf heroes.
• Alt Dwarf – It will come soon. Maxim had nothing to share on what skills it might possess or other features of the class. No consideration has been given to when alt-tribal will be implemented. The focus is first and foremost on alt-dwarf.
• Maxim talked about the possibility of having future alt classes (beyond dwarf and tribal) being made playable only at higher levels. I.e. you unlock the ability to play a new alt-class at level 16. No time frame given at all for this.
• There will be new creatures introduced in the PoTs. We have seen some already this PoT; expect more in the future.
• Maxim talks about the state of the damage calculator and wanting to fix errors of display damage. Since the interview, he has gone through and changed a number of the damage displays so that they are more accurate (i.e. Fiends’ leap).
• In future blindfold tournaments they will place some restrictions on different classes/factions to affect the balancing. "Let's call it some kind of magic shell that will cut some skills of the faction."
• They may consider making a section for backpacks in the market. They may also consider adding backpack items as components of sets (i.e. temporal set).
- The artifacts for level 17 and above will eventually make their way to map facilities.
- They will consider revising some of the old faction based sets. i.e. Demonic Soldier, Dwarf Craftsman sets… The way Maxim sees it, they want to make the sets better for the faction they were intended for. He says, he wants to do it on the basis that most of the faction based rare sets are not being utilized in the clan wars and any changes made to these sets are likely to affect those clan battles only.
"For example, few knights take part in the clan battles, and it is necessary to introduce bonuses for the knight-warrior's set just for the knights, so that players can take this set, put it on the knight and go into the no art restriction fights without any limitations by wearing this set" Wording a little confusing, but the intention is there ;) | • Regarding events;
- When alt-dwarf is implemented they plan to have an event without limitation on arts, similar to the cloud essence type battles.
- They plan to repeat the event where you could purchase the Survilurg set arts. They may rebalance the event a little, so not so many arts are flooding the market.
• They want to change the way that TG and RG caravans are balanced. Rather than have the system of balance now, they will consider putting in a system where the difficulty decays over time. As an example: you win a bunch of battles on one day and then the next day the difficulty will start reduced, you don’t have to lose battles and gain high fsp from those losses to reduce the difficulty again.
• There will be no full scale mobile app for the game. However, they are working on making a lightweight version for mobile.
• They will consider adding new shop arts to the artifact shop that will be comparable with the current "shop equivalent" donation arts.
• There are no plans to return diamonds as a reward for PvP tournaments.
• They may finally consider the alchemist guild, but would not want to base it around the current set of elements in the game. There would need to be a new set of elements introduced. If they were to implement the guild, then potions would need to have minimal effect on the balancing as the Admins don’t want every player to need to have a potion to be competitive in battles.
• With regards to advertising, apparently there are some limited banner ad campaigns around. Maxim also stated that the game is advertised via. Search engine ads. He is reluctant to put ads out on new websites which direct traffic based on cookies etc. because he believes that there is little player retention versus the high costs imposed.
• Maxim says it is wrong for players to be fined for entering CG with less than the average FL etc. He may find a way to hard code the restrictions into the game. (Which may have been done since the interview already).
"What about Lordswm? After Arctic has left, the server has vegetated (stagnated)"
Maxim: "Everything we do, we try to copy over to the English server"
Maxim: In the near future it is not planned to do anything specifically for the lords, I do not know what can be done to somehow cheer the atmosphere there."
The next interview is planned for September.
Unless otherwise stated, there is no necessary time frame for any of these ideas to be put into fruition. | Nice.. good to know
Eagerly waiting for new alt, also new campaign :) | Thanks, quite interesting reading. Good for me I dont have to save another 1kk gold to finish AG2 as new campaign will be introduced | Thanks for the news! | Nice translation diz, thanks! | Thanks ! | They want to change the way that TG and RG caravans are balanced. These ones are my favorites :) | thank you | Very good job Corey, thank you. :)
Yesterday I also started to translate the questions, until I noticed how long the interview actually is. Then I decided I wasn't bored enough to continue :D | • Planned changes to CG. I like the banner score idea, I hate this new 'balance,' it will simply result that good players will be stuck with bad players, having to carry the team all the times. Taking in account that there's a language barrier, it just won't be very fun to who doesn't know how to speak in russian.
Everything else was pretty good though.
The ones that I most liked would be the new TG/RG system (assuming it doesn't take forever to decay and it doesn't scale too quickly), and the possibility to decrease the monster scaling difficult level, since it had taken away some MG points from new players, which is completely unfair. | it will simply result that good players will be stuck with bad players,
It may match good players with good players, thus creating more competitive and balanced battles ;)
Remember on the flip side of having one good and one bad player (as an example) is that in an equal battle - The enemy would be in the exact same position.
until I noticed how long the interview actually is.
Yes, it took me 2 hours to work through it and pull out the points that I found interesting. Certainly a lot longer than the last interview that they did with Maxim! ;) | Yes, it took me 2 hours to work through it and pull out the points that I found interesting. Did you translate it and put it in bullet points like this? :O
Thanks a lot!:D | thanks, corey, this is very informative. | It may match good players with good players, thus creating more competitive and balanced battles ;)

We'll see, time will tell us.
As I see it will search for the players with the highest winning percentage, then it will match these players with those with the lowest winning percentage overall.
As such, it simply cannot mix good players with good players, unless all any other player is taking a vacation at the moment of match making.
It could work as you said, if there's a different set of priority when searching for team members, which I believe would be way more adequate.
The system would match the people with the highest winning percentage and create a room for them, and search the people with the lowest winning percentage and create a different game room for them, that way good players would be automatically filtered from bad players and carrying team circustances would happen a little more rarely. Although the time of match making would significantly increase, leading to less game rooms to be formed in the time limit and/or even creating the first issue due lack of eligible players, thus the older system would be better. | By the way, if they give us the same CG guild points ratio on 1v1 than we get in a 3v3, then I would be totally fine with the new system, since we could just duel and not get penalized for doing that. | thanks for translating that huge interview and making it readable for us! | You're the best, Corey, thank you (hug) | Corey,
Thank you very much.
