Not bought a tower yet, was testing to see how it affected difficulty. I think total resources earned affect it, but not whether they are distributed or not (As expected but wanted to check)

I think early battles are easy, ranks up a lot later on. The order of tower upgrades is significant within this. As I recall it is better to fully upgrade one tower, than buy new ones.

I think as well there may have been some that went defensive builds and so just used the towers as meat shields rather than actually as a threat. Maybe shadow barbs with mass disrupt and low AI priority for the ogres?

Why is my population less? I have got 11 wins.

You lost houses during battle.
The first battle I fought was against a wizard. They looked pretty squishy but when I checked their armor, GOSH. OK.. I was chasing the gargoyles pretty hard and my guardians barely made it LOL. The enemy wizard spammed lightning all over the game zz.

Low pop cause lots of fights were too close. Demons are cheaters, they just gate and gated units start destroying vilage...

Also lost one bcause it was a medium defense barb with insane numbers of shooters, even confused those guys could oneshot my lizard stack and their melee was formidable as well (5 behe, 320 hobgoblins).

So yeah, prob not gonna go well with such start..

Thoughts on Defensive Structure upgrade order? I've got two archer towers and no upgrades, 10 combats in I can either get a third tower, or upgrade one to have either no ranged penalty or to have knocking shot. Not sure which way to go.
where are you placing the tower?
My feelings with towers is that it is better to have less towers with more upgrades, than more towers with less. The exception to this could be is you are going for a defensive set up and using the towers purely to absorb damage.

The reason for this is that when you lose you have to pay resources to fix them, the more towers, the greater the cost of a loss. Also the benefits are magnified if they are in one tower (knocking shot better with double shot for example).

I have only one tower right at the back with all upgrades and endurance 7 damage 5.

My recollection of this event was however that there was a clearly optimal strategy from the results of those that won it last time around, I just cannot remember exactly what that was! It may be worth looking at the post at the culmination of the last one of these and look at the winners (as I recall there were some with almost no losses, achieved by some losses to peasants along the way so that the difficulty did not sky rocket) as well as good play and tactics obviously!

Winners were low levels mostly.....
Decided to deliberately lower the difficulty when possible by allowing them to kill some peasants when the battle is sorted. Ideally therefore controlling the total population to stay in a range I feel I can win, without it escalating into a range I cannot.

However, I do feel kind of bad sacrificing peasants even though they aren;t real!

Depending how mean you're feeling.. can keep population down with your zerkers and patri firewalls. ;)
Could do, generally however those options are needed early on to ensure the win, and are then often not available for late game peasant culling. Fortunately if you leave one stack super weak he will happily oblige.
There's some interesting meta here, going from a "protect the peasants" event to a "how to sneakily kill my own peasants" :p
