What is going on with chaos wizard? :p

I can't seem to win anything. I think my talents are okay, but it maybe that i am targeting wrong stacks.
Here is my recent battle -

Should i have killed the trees/boars that were blocking barb shooters mid game instead of killing savage treants?
I never liked chaos wizard in CG, seemed too inflexible. It is a fairly passive set up in so far as other players dictate the engagement, and you have to respond to them. Basically a lot abou t the match up, fire off magic and hope they don;t get too many morale or luck bursts.

BW by comparison tend to more often dictate the play and can be used to force mistakes due to the threat of DoF or a hit from a full stack of genies/sphinx etc and the fact that gremlins pretty much always shoot first.

What to target is about how much you reduce their damage output, or remove their ability to reduce your teams damage output. The first of these is then about what their hp is versus damage, as well as whether they are in range or not. For example ranged can hit from the start, but is usually half damage, whereas melee is full damage always. You also need to consider what your team mate can do and the impact on them, since your job is about keeping them alive in the early game, whereas it is about keeping yourself alive in the mid to late game.

As a general rule this means that you should preferentially kill higher tier troops over lower tier, since your "assumed might" team mate can kill lower tier troops more easily, whereas obviously magic does not discriminate. The exception being perhaps high damage low hp troops like efk or sharps etc.

I am sure you know this already, since you have more cg experience than most here (and definitely me) however that is the thought process I would go through when selecting my target.
Not that it would have won you the game, but you may want a rethink on your mini-arts (you have morale mini art on golem for example).


In general your win rate isn't too off the avg for wizard (esp considering you need PoS and wiz is already quite bad against rushing factions and dwarves)
I switched to barb now after massive fail streak as wizard. Anyway, please check my talents and recruiting from the battle posted above and tell me how to improve. I miss playing mindless chaos :)

Thanks for pointing it out. I only want to keep morale on titans, genies and lores. Is that okay?
Too low def, even your sphynx warrior only have 91 def. Your opponent unicorn having like 96 atk. Its bad matchup vs rusher ce with 65 hero atk.

The rule of thumb as caster that for every same troops tier, your def in defending stance should be higher than opponent atk.
so i should wear another ring of cold instead of stellar ring? Actually wiz damage feels low so i was reluctant to even wear 1 cold ring.
Normally I would wear one defence ring and shield, the thoughts for me is that you need to be able to actually survive a few hits, but i am finding that chaos is actually probably better in solo than mixed because most factions have at best 2 damaging units to focus first and so that removes the difficulty in 2v2 of knowing which of the many units to target (Though I would prefer 3v3 out of all options if I had a mate of higher level)
You know what is wrong with you . You need to upgrade your MG,WG and if possible AG too.. It will give you more stats for defense and spell power.

Yeah Mg is more critical for mage than for other factions I guess because of the chance to put it into spell power instead of a useless point in attack or so
I am way lower lvl than you and my CG experience is also poor compared to OP, not to mention I am coming from a 3 year break and my PvP skills are rusty and my knowledge of the 'meta' and new classes very limited, but oh well...

Chaos wizard has been my favorite way of playing since barbs have magic resistance as racial. It is very true is a reactive way of playing and feels limited somehow, but I also think it *should* be possible to create a somewhat competitive build than *can* have a chance against most factions.

I feel however Chaos build seem to be pushed aside for several reasons, like the advent of seasonal arts which so far only benefit might builds (except RoC I guess since it has magic piercing, but that benefit is minimal of what a might build get with, let's say, Cloak of Sun or SoC). Not to mention new 'rusher' classes that feel very difficult to play against with Chaos build (Charmer and Fury barbs, hello). This gets summed up with the other 'handicaps' that always been there like you never get advantage of morales or luck burts, but that is a choice you make when playing Chaos.

I feel it needs a bit of rework to be able to compete with Chaos Wizard somewhat consistently, atm it feels way more 'safe' to play BW, or even Might Classic Wizard, which it's a bad joke imho. I know you are now allowed to make suggestions to strengthen factions and all, but something like changing Genies ability to be able to actually choose the spell they do, give them something like only 10 mana, would make a trick. Altho maybe would too OP, not so sure (as landing Stoneskin + Evasion on gargs at first turn gives very good chances against some factions). I mean, admins already opened the can of worms adding the moronic 'surge of energy' to guards so I don't think it's too much of a stretch.

I am probably very wrong on several points of this post so feel free to criticize, always happy to discuss meta and learn :)

Thanks. I have thought about genies spell too, and i think it would be a bit too much if you could choose to buff your units with the correct spells.


One more thing i have thought about is trying dominion of tempest with advanced chaos instead of expert chaos. I think against rushers it will make my chain bounce to my own troops and that could be fatal before defending. Still i think it could be pretty useful against a number of things even if i do lower damage per cast.
