Seems like if it is battlemagi they are more likely to shoot instead of punch.

Wear a good cape (of sun)
Wear 2* dragon eye/ros instead of mithril. You need the ini. If you get ini of shrews over 20, you get two turns of shrews before magi and you're almost done.
Ini is what you need, and morale.
