Gambler's Guild

AuthorGambler's Guild
I have renewed interest in the guild, and wanted to know a couple of things.

Tournaments:
1] What exactly is the new reward policy? I see that you now get money from individual wins, not just the end.
2] What's up with the Bots? Are they good enough to beat real humans? Is participation now guaranteed in all gambler tournaments?
3] On Gambler day, participation costs are zero. Are rewards same, or are they reduced too?

4] Can past games no longer be viewed now? I only see the end state, not the game itself.
5] Is there a list of top players, sorted by win-rate? Maybe I can spectate their games live.
6] Why is that a lot of players, despite having win-rate > 1.05, still have lost money on Tavern? Just trying to wrap my head around it. Doesn't look like win rate corresponds well with money made.
1. All the card tournaments now give gold for every win. For small tournaments (64 players, 1000 gold entry fee) the reward progression for wins is as follows: 333, 667, 1333, 2667, 5333, 10667. You can see an example here, from a player who just won: https://www.lordswm.com/pl_cardlog.php?id=178552
The reward policy for larger tournaments follows the same trend, but obviously with larger numbers. Overall, this change is good because the payouts from tournaments are larger - the total payout is 63993 gold, and players pay 64000 total. Before the payout was 60000 (36000 for winner, 12000 for runner up, 2x6000 for semi-finalists) so now the odds are better.

2. It is a blessing to play a bot in tournaments! They play a lot worse than the average human. They can beat humans, but only because there is significant luck involved in card games. Is participation now guaranteed in all gambler tournaments? Not sure what you mean? If the tournament does not fill up with players over 10 minutes, bots will take the remaining spots, so every card tournament will be full.

3. In the past, gambler day had the same rewards but recently the rewards have been halved. :( It's still free though.

4. I don't think card games could ever be replayed, only viewed live. Maybe it was possible to replay a very long time ago.

5. You can sort the "statistics of all characters" page with "cards balance." This will show you the players with the most profit in cards. http://abouthwm.ru/players.php?lang=1&lvlp=1&lvln=22&male=1&female=1&perpage=50&ordtype=kall& ;napr=1&stat=3&f1=1&f2=1&f3=1&f4=1&f5=1&f6=1&f7=1&f8=1&f9=1&nick=

6. Of course, the 5% commission has a role in it, but assuming that the ratio of wins to losses is the same across all betting amounts, you should still be profitable (since you said >1.05 win rate). Well, that's kind of the problem :) that assumption is not really valid. The reason you see this is probably because the players have a higher win rate for 0 gold or small bet games, but a lower win rate for high bet games. This is likely to happen because there is an enormous difference in skill level from people betting 1000 gold vs 20000 gold. The result is that you can have losses in tavern even with a good overall win rate.

Hope this helps!
Thanks Dragon Eater.

for 6) Your reasons are valid, but I think there's another reason. The ones losing money despite >0.5 win rate are the ones that have lots of tournament wins. Tournament total pool is significantly lesser than sum of entry fees.
Normal tournament:
Money in: 64*1000
Money out: 36000 + 12000 + 6000 = 54000
Those are not great odds. Unless you play at night, and rely on killing bots to recoup money, it's much worse than the commision that you lose in normal games

Of course you can't edit when you write too fast.
Just to clarify, the payout used to be 60000 for tournaments because there are two semi-finalists who are awarded 6000 gold each. 36000 + 12000 + 6000 + 6000 = 60000. So the house used to take 4000 gold, which is 6.25% of the money put in - only slightly higher than the 5% commission.

Anyway it's in the past, now the tournaments pay out pretty much all the money.

My bad then. I was reading about the game, which says
The prize consists of three parts, awarded to the winner, the runner-up, and the third part divided equally between two semi-finalists. So I presumed 6000 split into two.
I've recorded my gameplay and live commentating of several tavern tourney games about a year ago

Would be fun to see others did a similar thing, and see their thought process behind this game

Also, a 1.05 win/loss ratio translates to about 51.2% winrate, which isn't high enough to compensate the empire's 5% tax or the tourney's profit-cost difference, as mentioned above.

There are people who's able to consistently get a winrate of around 55% or higher though, which results in long-term profit.

Interesting idea. I'm definitely interested in understanding your thinking min-game. So I'll have a look.
