In the following battle, why did the centaur' Vigilance ability not kicked in when the lone cerberus first approached it? The ability clearly says that it "will perform a ranged attack at the first enemy creature to enter its 5-tile range".

It did not trigger because at the end of it's move, the Cerberus, while within a 5-tile range of the Centaur, was adjacent to the Centaur it cannot shoot an enemy which is standing right next to it.
Hm. That's not how it works in the desktop game (HoMM). It does look like the centaur shoots after the move, whereas in the desktop game, it shoots as soon as the enemy moves within 5 tiles, possibly before the enemy completes its move. I wonder if this different implementation is intentional.
In PoT, it didn't stop movement to attack if you were attacking the centaur. Basically vigilance only triggers if you stop at a tile in the 2-5 range.
