Author | Translation of the news |
Since i hear a lot of bad things about translation here is a little explanation and invitation to help us.
Original text comes to translator at the same time as .ru get news. They see it, we see it. Why is it not translated by google translator? Try it and you will see it yourself. Lords are heroes and many other things google can not translate correctly. To me it's not important but it is to admins. Why is it late? First translator needs to translate it. That takes few hours. Then editors (me, vicky, merlin) check if translated text is understandable. Only then it is sent to Lexa which decided when to post it on .com. We try to do it as fast as possible but everything takes time.
I don't like to do it but i want to help. Only one native english speaker in translation team though. Do you want to help? Or only to criticize? That means to start translating immeditaly when you get the text andthen push others to get news posted on .com. According to your wishes drop everything you are doing, run to computer and start translating. No excuses. If you do that you are welcome to start the work (you will get paid some gold from admins). And when even tiny mistake is done players WILL start to bash you. Why last mistake was made (end of event on 9th) i do not know. It happens.
If .com community decides that translations are not required we can stop with it. There will be no news and new arts descriptions. Or maybe at best in russian. Your choice. Less work for everyone. | For me after hearing the hard work you guys do I would rather have it late than never | Nobody is hating on the volunteer editors, you guys are doing a fantastic job and are helping the community in the process so do not feel disheartened. I remember the days when .com was completely unloved, no translations, no events, no attention. It sucked, this is a compromise. People who think the helpful players here are to blame can get lost.
The translation delays are an admin mistake because their priorities lie elsewhere, the process should be this:
News written in Russian well in advance
News translated ahead of time by paid translators (real money)
Russian and English version released at the same time
Yes there is adhoc translation but really the news should be planned in advance. One paid employee should be able to translate several months worth of upcoming news in a day. This work could even be completed by gig workers on mturk, fiver or similar and wouldn't even cost much.
Google translate is not appropriate for the fantasy language used here and many would complain. | I agree with you Acean. | It’s a shame they would never do that though because the admins will not spend money on .com
But they should give the translators the news a few days in advance so we can get it on time and so the translators do not have to stress about rushing it because that helps no one | Also a big delay comes from waiting for lexa to post the edited news, there are many stages to the translation and stages and so of course there will be some delay. The combat briefing can be done in a matter of minutes, the story often takes a lot of effort to get the correct meaning across, conversations between us and the .ru story writer using google translate, its tough... just look at the last event, try translating the story part from .ru announcement and see if you would be happy to have that sent out to everyone! | First of all I would like to say that we appreciate our translators and editors work. We know you do the best you can in the given circumstances.
Don't mind the bashing too much. It may seem targeted at you, but in reality it's targeted at the whole process. It's the process that needs optimization so we can get the news in time and accurately.
I would recommend taking the following steps:
1. Get the admins OK to split the announcement into 2 parts: Briefing (as this can be done fast) and the story line (as this one takes longer). I don't think we would mind getting the briefing fast so we know what to expect from the event...and getting the story line a day later.
2. Get the news faster from the admins. If you can get the news 1-2 hours before it's posted on .ru, maybe you have enough time to translate the briefing and get it posted in the same time as on .ru | Yeah, please don't take it personally when we complain. It's the system that needs to be improved, nothing much the volunteers can do.
I think we should remind ourselves this is a Russian game after all. The fact that players have to volunteer to sort these problems says a lot about the admin’s priorities.
Perhaps, we should set our expectations right, or play games that were built for English speakers. | But they should give the translators the news a few days in advance so we can get it on time and so the translators do not have to stress about rushing it
Yes there is no reason why it should come out of the blue for you guys, as you say you can't just drop your life to translate a fantasy text when lexa decides to put it out.
There's no reason they can't give you a list of news releases 4 or 6 weeks in advance with a schedule of when they need completing by. This means you can do them at your leisure instead of having to rush at inconvenient times, also .ru/.com news could go out at the same time.
Really they should give you autonomy to finalise and post it also i.e. give you permissions to use the announcement forum. Way back when I think skunder had these permissions and wrote the .com story?
You are confidants helping with the game, you'd think they'd place a bit more trust in you. What are you going to do, leak the game lore a week in advance, tell people an event is on the way? | I don't hate the translators. I am saying the translators are not needed.
Just auto google translate and post.
Slight inaccuracies are understandable. Tbh, i just log in to russian server and read announcements via google translate there when it comes out.
I can understand 99% fine.
Its annoying to receive news late, and although I understand its not the editors fault, or not that I dont appreciate yall translating the news, its still annoying regardless. | Story (com server)
The Empire's security intelligence service began to record a significant movement on the smuggling trails as an all-destroying "amphibian storm" rained down on the bandit wastelands. Apparently, someone there had a very hard time, since there was such an urgent need for so much additional provision and ammunition. It is a pity, but it seems that this time someone will have to restore the destroyed rat holes by its own efforts.
Lords and Ladies, the activity of smugglers has noticeably increased in recent days - and the security intelligence reports that it is no longer able to independently hold at bay such a flow of illegal freight. Therefore, Warlord Grammith calls on everyone to join the combat operation to catch smugglers. The court magician Abu-Bakir, due to the special importance of the operation, promises to provide magical support to the armies of active interceptors. In turn, Councilor Feurlis strongly recommends that you familiarize yourself with the new guidelines based on fresh intelligence.
Story (RU server google translated)
As an overwhelming "amphibian storm" hit the bandit wastelands, the Empire's internal intelligence service began to record a significant uptick in smuggling trails. Apparently, someone there had a very hard time, since there was such an urgent need for so many additional supplies and ammunition. It is a pity, but it seems that this time someone will have to restore the destroyed rat holes solely on their own.
Heroes, the activity of smugglers has noticeably increased in recent days - and the internal intelligence reports that it is no longer able to independently restrain such a flow of illegal goods. In this regard, Governor Grammit calls on everyone to join the combat operation to catch the smugglers. And the court magician Abu Bakr, in connection with the special importance of the operation, promises to provide magical support to the armies of active interceptors. During the event, Heroes will be able to receive up to 33 pieces of the Celestial Bow and up to 20 pieces of the Imperial Amulet. And also up to 10 pieces of Heavenly Bow if their war clan takes a prize! | Apart from very slight naming errors, the entire instructions is understandable.
The story is also very clear. I rather receive on time, accurate translations rather than slow, human-error prone translations. | It says this in in your profile kchong:
Any conversations held in foreign language with strangers will be replied to in english if they contain "rough" or "informal" language.
This is due to google translate not translating well at all. In the past, I have used the word "service" in google translate when using the russian forums to sell my guide service. Google translate translated it as the "service a prostitute provides". In return, I was punished with a forum ban when it was NOT my fault at all.
Unsure if English is your first language or not but google translate doesn't read too well to native speakers. | Yes there is no reason why it should come out of the blue for you guys,
This wouldn't be a good idea from admins point of view, leaking events to translators is a good way for people to buy up arts in advance and give people planning time. | Read what I wrote above. What I use is for communication, and there have been case in the past where i called someone a noob and got fined 1 gold and a warning, all translation story based, with no insults will be ok.
It reads well enough for me, like i said I rather receive on time, accurate translations rather than slow, human-error prone translations. | Advisor Fjörlis Come on.. | 1. Get the admins OK to split the announcement into 2 parts: Briefing (as this can be done fast) and the story line (as this one takes longer). I don't think we would mind getting the briefing fast so we know what to expect from the event...and getting the story line a day later.
I think this is a good suggestion, we can pass it onto lexa to try.

What are you going to do, leak the game lore a week in advance, tell people an event is on the way?
Exactly this is what they don't want. I'm fairly sure they dont even let the .ru story writer play the game so he can do them early. I wouldnt put my house on it, just unlikely which is a shame :( | I rather receive on time, accurate translations rather than slow, human-error prone translations.
If you google translate, often get on time inaccurate translations. Especially when it's a new event that have unfamiliar mechanics. | I'm fairly sure they dont even let the .ru story writer play the game so he can do them early.
The .ru story writer does have a game account, but only so that he can understand the game better. He's a very creative guy. Most people don't read the story part of an event announcement, only the mechanics part, but he puts a lot of thought and effort into these stories.
I used to spend hours chatting with him on each event, to make sure that the translation accurately told the story he wanted to tell. |
