The chance for a triggering ability is based on the ratio of hp between the attacking and defending stack i.e. a big enemy stack has good chance to knock back a small friendly stack.
In this case you only had a few ogres and the NPC stacks were quite large so the knockback chance is high.
You probably wouldn't be surprised if 22 horses fear attacked 14 ogres in a commanders guild battle, well the maths is the same here even if the enemy stacks are much weaker.

† Triggering abilities may trigger during any attack. The probability of triggering depends on HP of damager and target.
If DHP ≥ THP, then
Probability = 25% + 3% * (DHP/THP);
else
Probability = 25% - 3% * (THP/DHP)
where:
» DHP is the total remaining HP of the damaging stack;
» THP is the total remaining HP of the target stack;
» Trigger probability lays within the interval of [5%;75%];
