What's better 52 defense with basic defence and avoidance or just 58 defense. People at my lvl have attack in the range of 50-60 or an avg of 55. Considering range resistance as an important aspect for my build.
It depends a lot on the faction you play. If you are using troops that are high-stat, then 58 defense is better, while if you're using troops that are low-stat, go for the defense talents.
As an example, a classic barb really doesn't benefit from defense stat points, since most of their troops will always have less defense than most enemies' attack. Meanwhile, something like melee wizard or UN play around troops with very high stats, so your defense stat points can easily put your defense well over enemy attack.

To simplify, if you can get your troop defense to within +-10 of enemy attack, stats are good.
If not, go for direct percentage reductions.
I'm not familiar with CL15 play, but if I'm worried about ranged defense, I always go for percentage reductions. That's because many ranged threats (Dwarf, Charmer Elf, Cyclops, DoF Dwarf, BW) will generally win the attack-vs-defense game.
raw stats are better. you get diminishing returns for % damage reductions.


so lets do the math. for simplicity lets go with shield+cloak on 20 for flat 40% damage reduction. if they would normally do 100 damage then it would be 60 after item reduction. avoidance would reduce it another 20% or 12 for a total of 48(12% damage reduction instead of 20% if used with cloak+shield) now to factor in anti, now lets say you have anti 11 to opponent, you would reduce another 33% damage off of the 48 for 32 total damage. now if you didnt use avoidance the total after shield+cloak and anti would be 40. so all in all avoidance would only give you a net 8% damage reduction instead of the advertised 20% due to diminishing returns.

only time i would suggest going for % damage reductions is if you go sun rings on something like dwarf for 75+ attack and 30 defense. this way you hit like a truck and since you have low defense you recieve more damage in melle and range therefore getting more value out of % reductions. this is why you see high attack low defense dwarfs running expert defense+avoidance and shield+cloak. high damage and relatively high tankiness to survive getting hit first from elves or battlewise etc.
