Hello all, I am very confused as to why I was given Guardians (that I have not constructed yet in castle) in this match ?

Quite unusual, it does appear to be a bug.
You didn't ask for it but if you are looking for tips don't split your stacks.
Half a stack of griffins or guards is not enough to protect your xbows. Not splitting them means you will feel the benefit of unlimited retal and increased chance to stun. Hitting with a bigger stack is more efficient in terms of damage taken/received.
