Pretty embarrassing behaviour on the court.
Not as embarrassing as Aaron Williams
Eating clean on busy schedule

So, I'm the guy who's living on takeout meals and Ubereats every day when I get home after 12–16 hr long shifts. Not working out regularly, no desire to cook, inevitably I begin to see my weight increasing. Starting today I will try to eat clean and would appreciate any tips you guys have. Mainly I created this thread for motivation to stay on the right track. In the past, I have kept a diary logging my meals and it was very helpful. Here I will write my regretful indulgences. Shame on me for needing this lol.

Actually, ate clean until dinner yesterday. But afterwards, I ate a whole 8 oz pack of salt and vinegar chips. That and soda are my Achilles heel. So far today I haven't ingested any garbage. Will update again if I do.
It is a tough gig being a doctor, I can only imagine the lure of convenient eating when you have worked hard and long hours both physically and psychologically.

There are two twin doctors in the UK who have a reasonable media presence (by virtue of some kids programs which to be honest are pretty good).

One of them (Xand Van Tulleken) has has significant issues with his weight, and they have become quite significant campaigners and educators about various aspects of diet. Given that you have the same professions, they may offer various it of info that chime with your own circumstance.

There is a multitude of similar things out their, but I have found the little snippets I have heard (mostly overhearing my wife listing to podcasts) interesting and making sense.

That being said I am not sure just how feasible some things are without a lot of organisation etc, which at some points in your life is just really hard.

For me, while I have always been pretty fit and basically eaten what I wanted without worrying, as I have got older the weight has crept on. I also tend to find that if I eat bready products at lunch, I am pretty likely to flag and feel sleep in the afternoon.

My easy switch is for a large bowl of breakfast cereal- though ones with more fibre and not much sugar (ie low glycemic index). This is just as convenient, but means I have taken on less calories while still being full.

This is easy for me as I have a sweet tooth and so can basically eat that sort of stuff all day. My wife is more of a savoury person, which makes it trickier, since she is less happy to eat that sort of thing.

Soup can be a similarly easy alternative, but not quite so convenient

For soda type things for me the main motivator for avoiding is my teeth rather than my weight. I can notice the impact of the sugar on the surface of my teeth in the hours after driknking it as microorganisms start having a field day.

For that I just drink water. This is mostly though as a teacher in a lab I have minimal opportunity to drink, and have often gone a whole working day without drinking. Obviously that is also bad, so ended up getting very good at drinking very fast (despite never being much of an alcohol drinker). I can drink a pint of water in a matter of seconds, and so it doesn;t really matter what it tastes like, it is gone too quick.

It is also useful to strategically use it to help me feel less hungry. Part of your hunger response is from the deflation of your stomach. part of hunger satiation, is from having a full stomach. Therefore it is possible to confuse hunger for thirst, and to deliberately use this interconnectivity.

Ie if I am hungry, but know I should not eat anything, but it is distracting me and making it harder to concentrate, I down a pint of water, and it ameliorates my hunger.

Just a couple of things from my experience should they be of use. I am sure you will crack it, though it is a thing that will never go away and never gets easier. Well done for tackling it so openly though. :)
This one is pretty good if you have the time to listen to it as a podcast type format

Not miles using the word ameliorate in 2025 lol.

What i have found cuts cravings is a good protein shake or milk, where i live we have protein enriched milk, if you drink half a litre of it, what i have done recently to cut my intake is down half a litre of said milk before i go to the lab and then three hours later eat like 8 olives and an apple with a cup of espresso. this concludes the day's food, when i get back i eat one meal, which i usually cook up in advance for the week with the other half of that milk, wait for a few hours, hit the gym (you can skip this step if you dont have time) come back, eat a small bowl of sorbet and try to sleep while the high/satisfaction from the fruit sugar lasts.

As for the trick miles said about water i used to exploit it during my UG and PG, i would eat something really small, like a pastie or a croissant even and then gulp down a litre of water, My running theory was that the water dilutes the juices in the stomach slowing down digestion delaying it and further hunger. I dont know if that theory is true. But water is goated for hunger purposes, and if you can add some black salt and lemon to it you could sip it all day.

AMELIORATE gawd damn
I saw a program probably a decade ago, where they got one group of people and gave them a meal with a drink of water, then for the others they took the same meal and blitzed it with the water, and then they ate it as a soup. Identical calorific values.

Those that had it as a soup took longer before they were hungry.

This is because the rate of stomach shrinking is linked to perception of hunger. If it shrinks quickly you feel hungrier, than if it shrinks slower.

This relates to the thickness of what you eat.

As such chew lots so you eat slower, and generally have your drink after your meal (so it mixes with the solid to make a paste, rather than before).
Omg thank you so much Miles and Igles for your useful advice. I was a bit overweight since childhood but in uni, I founded a gaming org which I thought was my passion. It was mostly all guys; playing all day together, eventually we got into working out together at the gym, and I was at my fittest more so than I'd been all my life during those 4 years. I've maintained some of it, but this year seems like I am doing a very good job of regressing to my former habits haha.

I usually don't have time for breakfast and tend to eat clean during lunch except when led astray by my friends and coworkers. It's the dinner that usually gets me, and a late-night snack. And its like all the cravings hit when I'm no longer at work. I know the science behind it, but it's a curse.

8/26 After dinner, I ate a slice of cheesecake that I bought from Sams. It wasn't a huge piece but definitely undid all my days' work.
As our grandfather used to tell us, "you are not hungry you are thirsty". :D
