AuthorNumbers, numbers...what do they mean?
In this last fight i was, 18 of my swordsmen went toe to tow against 20 forest keepers of a very fine general!

To my dismay, my swordsmen got slaughtered, even though their stats were twice the keeper's stats (14 att, 10 def for me 7 att, 5 def for the keepers)

I lost the battle (and i'm pretty sure i know why - in order to engage the keepers i foolishly moved in range of his elven bowmen) and this got me intrigued!

How do the stats work? I mean, in his first attack, his keepers dealt 83 pts of damage, which was by far more than what their average should have been (which, i think, is 3.5 per keeper, for a total of 70 pts of damage) and it seems that my defense, which was higher than his attack, did not make any difference at all!!!

So how do these numbers work? At the time, my swordsmen were surrounded by tiny enemy sprites, did it matter? Maybe units have some penalty when they are surrounded?

Any ideas will be appreciated!

Thanks a lot,
Andronikos
Thanks for your query.
Attack and defense parameters influence damage dealt (and taken). The exact formula for physical damage is:
-IF Attacker's attack>= Defenders' defense:
D=Rnd(min,max)*N*(1-0.03*M)*[1+0.05(Attack-Defense)]
-IF attack<defense:
D=Rnd(min,max)*N*(1-0.03M)/[1+0.05(Defense-Attack)]

D-damage
Rnd(min,max)-random integer of the min-max damage interval
N-number of creatures in stack
M-mutual faction skill (i.e.: What level of the enemy faction's racial skill does the defender possess. http://www.heroeswm.com/forum_messages.php?tid=1832233 )

Thus, every 1 unit of difference between attack and defense increases/decreases the dealt damage by an average 5%

Shooters deal normal damage only at their shooting range (6 tiles of the battlefield usually). If the target is out of that range, shooters only deal 50% normal damage.
Shooters deal 50% the normal damage to Swordsmen due to their Large shield ability. This means they only deal 25% the normal damage if swordsmen are outside the 6-tiles range.
Shooters deal 50% the normal damage in melee combat.

Creatures being surrounded does no effect on damage dealt or taken, unless they are shooters. Shooters cannot shoot while there is an enemy creature right adjacent to them. They will have to run away or go melee, which has a penalty (see above).

The player was lucky at the first strike (as all elves are =) ) - he got a 5 on the random part of the formula from gis (2-5) damage delta. the 100 damage for 20 keepers, decreased by the (defense-attack) coefficient, gave the result of 83 damage.

Another crucial moment is that Keepers have way higher initiative than swordsmen do. Creatures only retaliate the first attack against them each turn, so the keepers should have taken a few "free" strikes.

PS: in your combat, you didn't move into the elven bowmen's range, there were certainly more than 6 tiles.
Thanks for your reply!

Hmmm...is there maybe a mistake in the maths you've posted? The type

D=Rnd(min,max)*N*(1-0.03M)/[1+0.05(Defense-Attack)]

suggests that the bigger the difference between the defender's defense and the attacker's attack, the greater the damage the defender sustains, which clearly can't be the case!

Maybe you meant

D=Rnd(min,max)*N*(1-0.03M)/[1-0.05(Defense-Attack)], instead?

So, what really happened was that they guy got really lucky in the beginning and did maximum damage, right? Could you also please explain how does initiave work? I did notice that elven troops get "free" attacks, but i don't really understand why...i mean, i thought that higher initiative strikes first, but it also seems to strike more as well! Is this reliable to happen or random?

Thanks a lot!

3.
No, the formulae is right.

You divide basic damage by difference between defence and attack.
The bigger the differense, the less damage you'll get.
too complicated for krunk...
Ah, yes, it's quite the same actually, i didn't realise that there was multiplication in the first type and division in the second one!

Thanks a lot!
