Author | Make people read game rules :) |
Perhaps you have noticed lately that there are some cheaters in the game?
Some are real cheaters, but others - the majority, I think - are just people who never even bothered to read game rules.
I know, it's stated in them that Ignorance of the rules does not relieve the responsibility for their violation but it changes little for people not reading them!!
I wonder if admins could make rule-reading a part of character registration process. Here are several possibilities:
- One extra page during character registration process, much like a software license. Okay, few people ever bother reading them, but they are displayed at least! And game rules, not legal gibberish, might be more interesting to newcomers.
There are even technical possibilities to have the "next" button appear only after 10 seconds, or forcing the user to scroll down, or checking a box telling he has read and agreed to game rules. Nothing fancy, but you get the idea.
- Another less intrusive possibility would be a private message from Administration. In many systems, newcomers receive a "greetings" message upon registering, the same could be implemented here. The message would welcome the new player and mention a link to game rule, insisting on their importance.
I don't know if Administrators will ever read this thread, but I think there are really low-cost solutions (in terms of development) that could vastly decrease the number of "good-willed cheaters", as I would call them.
Thanks for reading. |
Dude, nice idea. But I truly think very few people will read the rules, no matter what you say.
And also, most rules here feel quite intuitive to me. I don't have to read the rules to know that stealing is bad, dis-respect of others (whether through bad language or whatever) is not welcome, having many accounts and transferring golds and items (when there is such a complex economy and such obvious efforts to make the game balanced and challenging for all players) gives an unfair advantage.
Good willed cheaters? The best lesson is a blocking. Then they may realize that the time wasted on a character that gets blocked was better spent reading the game rulebook =) |
How about a brief test (Multiple choice) of about 5 common questions such as,
How many accounts are you allowed? etc.
Which you have to take before you can enter the site. (And after you have read the rules of course!)
And even if they get them wrong, the next page could tell them the right thing to do. E.g If the multiple choices for the above question had been 1,2,3 or 4 and the player had selected 1, then on the next page it could say...
You are allowed up to 3 accounts. These accounts are not allowed to make transfers to each other and must be signed appropriately. (Perhaps that's too heavy for a new player to understand, But something along the lines of that.)
At least then they will have no excuse to say they didn't know they were cheating. |
I think people will surely not read it carefully .. just read it fast and play .. nothing they will understand .. :)
Like EULA (end-user license agreement) .. we just click "I Accept" without reading all the rules ... :) |

I like your suggestions. Make it like the Sphinx riddle and reward people. |

Very good idea. I always think dangling the carrot has more success than brandishing the whip.
Another way is to have commonly breached rules appear as regular hints for the game eg "Foul words can have you banned for 1 month", "Any transfer of any kind is logged and is viewable by any player".
Having studied law I know that that non english speakers have a more difficult time interpreting rules and what is considered a breach than non english speakers.
Perhaps ask for volunteers to write game rules in other languages. By means keep the official language as English. This can reduce the disillusionment of not or poorly understanding the rules.

Very good idea
One other thing ive seen in games is check boxes.
So for example there are 2-3 check-boxes.
But one of them has... I did not read the rules.
You'll be surprised how many people just tick it anyway and press next. |
i absolutely agree with the suggestions. and i'm sure the rest 5-6 people who visit this section of the forum will totally support the idea... if you catch what i mean. |
Im agree with this suggestion, its make too much sense to not be agree with
and we see so many people getting in chat to ask question that would have been answered if they had read the rules |
actully this is the first good idea that i`ve seen in this section and i afree with the question test for making sure that you`ve read the rule
and i`m afraid that if people see the rule and that they must see it they will get bored and leave the game regesteration |
+1, and then probably make the rules section more stand out or move them to somewhere more noticeable instead of in about the game section. Not many beginner read those and I often see higher levels who doesn't know what morale is (=.=") and so on. (=.=" x2) |
