If you are ambushed and you have no gold, you will still lose gold and drop into negative gold. Another possibility is that he was fined for financial assist. His transfer log would likely show what caused him to drop.

And the 3rd possibility is to lose a card game and roulette roll in the same time. I have seen this, although I am not quite sure how it happened.
He must have created the cardgame before betting and accepted it after. And lost both. :-) |

If that above was your friend, he was fine by administration for vulgar language.
Above mentioned 3 ways are the only ones I think that can lead to negative gold amount. Looking at his nick, you should probably pick your friends more carefully.
