im a little confused about what weapons and armor do. do they help your army or hero or both if so are they really thet good to have. P.S. im more confused about armor

Most improve your hero's parameter, which improve your troop's fighting capabilities.

Take this Leather armor for example:

It increase Defense parameter by 1.

Some artifacts have extra bonus, which is written in Italic on the description, Platemail for example:
https://www.lordswm.com/art_info.php?id=full_plate
In addition reduces melee damage taken by 5%.
