Im just curius about copyrights, Lords of War and Money are using HOMM graphics, unit types, castle types and more. Does Ubisoft( it is current HOMM copyrights owner? ) dont get you any problem? Anyone can take thier graphics or game ideas and use it? LORDs are free to play but i have noticed that you have player can buy certain stuff via Paypal so this game is not fully non commercial. | the recently installed (ported actually) graphics pack bears an even bigger resemblance to the ubisoft's creature portraits, so i guess they are not that afraid of copyright problems. | Im just curius about copyrights, Lords of War and Money are using HOMM graphics, unit types, castle types and more.
COPYRIGHTS?? I'd really like to read a court case from Ubisoft just out of curiosity, since HoMM series are already so unoriginal to begin with. I think they are great games, but let's get serious for a minute. Do you think Ubi can claim a copyright on any creature they used in their game? Knights? Dragons, maybe? So what then? Building castles for heroes? Moving units on a grid battlefield? That would be fun to see. :) | I agree with Kotrin
None of the ideas of these games can compare with one company
Stragtergy - chess more like HOMM
Fantasy creatures, how can they even get anything from copy right rules | Actually, people often mix up things. If this game can be accused of something, it's probably of plagiarism, which is a totally different matter than a copyright infringement.

Quoting this site:
Ideas, principles, and concepts are specifically excluded from copyright protection. If they weren't, then the first person who wrote a romance novel would have a monopoly.
Here, we have a look-like HoMM game in some respects, but none of the graphical elements of the game has been *copied*, they're rather mimicked.
Plagiarism is badly perceived in some environments, like in the research field, and can cause administrative penalties there. But in real-life, it's awfully common. Soda and food brands plagiarize each other all the time, as do movies, computer games, car manufacturers, etc. It's extremely difficult to bring any case of plagiarism to the court, and should it be, I wonder how many people would have legal claims to bring against Ubisoft for HoMM series :) |
