diamonds can give you gold (1 diamond = 2500 gold), or you can build certain buildings before the required level.
ex. upgrade for gargoyles is officially level 8, enchanted gargoyles.
but you can buy diamonds and upgrade gargoyles at level 6. |

Diamonds can give you few things: Gold, creature upgrades sooner(at lower level) and free thief guild entry(for 80 diamonds).
It sure makes few things easier and faster, but its up to you. |
You buy them to support the server, ultimately. Everything can be earned "for free," but keeping the server up is only free because of the people that buy diamonds.
So if you like the game. Support it, and help the site stay open.

| Diamonds, in the most, just replace a LOT of enrolling. You can get certain unit upgrades earlier as well. The unit upgrade is the only meaningful thing that gives you an edge, and someone who spent money to get fully enchanted arts would be able to overcome that edge anyway. |
