Weapons give you AP
It says the AP on the weapons
And in your inventory it shows you how much AP you are using |

Correct
You can not fight in any fights other than ambushes and dragons without AP
The cheapest art set is Defender shield + Light axe which is normally around 4,000g

@ViluDaskaar: You can RENT artifacts instead of buying them. Instead of 4000 Gold you'd only have to pay around 200 to hire some weapons for a fight. This will enable you to in hunts to avoid the work penalty.

In this game each piece your equipment becomes an expendable item of War.
And as such they perfectly translate into the French term ammunition. Which us English borrowed from you in the times of Napoleon.
Hence AP, Ammunition Points.
This is confusing as in modern times, for all over the world ammunition is solely related to firearms, chemical propellants, explosives, and associated casings, electronics etc. The word Equipment, or just Gear, becomes more suitable.
