temporary solution, if you already know which battle you want to watch:
open the battle in a new tab
click 'view entire combat' (and then the pause button if you want)
go back to the 'map-tab' and start traveling
enjoy the battle :) |

And if you're ambushed then be warned somehow, it can't be too hard to do it. |
