1st Lordswm Olympic Games [discussion]

Author1st Lordswm Olympic Games [discussion]
Post and discuss your feedback about the 1st LordsWM Olympic Games here. What went good? What could be better?

Please keep this thread constructive and civilized (!) - try to give Vlaer (and other aspiring organizers) something to work with for future events...
The organization was very good though if the system of the [BRACKETS] could be explained in the very first post, it could have been better as there was lot of confusion considering brackets among my clanmates :)

Will sure be taken care.
Topic moved from "Ideas and suggestions" to "Off-game forum".
for harddude:

I personally wasn't confused at all, but that could have been because I had the chance to check the forum quite often. But one can't expect to keep the forum open and refresh every minute, so having the explanation in the first post is indeed better.

I think it was also a matter of translation. Brackets are indeed the typographic characters [ and ], but Vlaer used this term to talk about the tournament schedules. (Unless I missed out on something and bracket is the correct term for those schedules.)

Which brings me to my own feedback.

Using the Challonge site was a very elegant way to organize the tournament and to keep track of next opponents etc. Simplifying the URLs later on using a sensible system (e.g. type GC at the end for Great Capital results) was even better. Well done!

In one of the final posts of the main thread Vlaer said that those final medal matches which have not been completed within the stipulated time frame have not been counted for medals at all, since giving medals for those matches which have not even taken place is extremely ridiculus.

My guess is, that Vlaer was referring to the system of letting a player win based on drawing lots. Ofcourse, giving someone a medal who didn't play a final match seems ridiculous, but I think you have to be consequent then. Why is letting a player win by luck in an earlier stage less ridiculous? After all, it could get him or her in the finals eventually (happened to me).

Only problem is, I can't think of any alternative. Perhaps giving finalists who couldn't play a match a medal would keep it consequent.

On a side note: using the roulette for drawing lots was genius. I was already thinking, beforehand, about how you were planning on keeping the drawing honest and neutral, but that was it. Good thinking.
The event was very organized.

The only problem I've faced was the forums, it was a bit confused, in next event (I don't know if mods will let) it could have a topic just for a level/location or, at least, one topic for combats and another for tavern games.

I agree. I think it was proposed somewhere in the beginning, but the mods decided against it.

IMHO, I hope next time we can get a little more room to organize something like this. Yes, it will take some space because it 'uses' a lot of topic lines, but then again, it was quite a big thing... and when it's over, the topics will disappear soon enough...

Basically, I think every user generated event here should be embraced and stimulated, also by the 'authorities'. But we can't do anymore than have this opinion - in the end, it's up to them.

(I was also thinking of all the Commanders Guild Tents, one for every combat level, which is allowed, which brings me to...) Why wasn't any thread created at the tournament section?

Another thing that comes to my mind... I had the feeling that Vlaer was a bit 'in a rush'. Multiple times we had to ask for a delay of the deadlines. Thankfully, we got them, but perhaps this 'stress' wasn't needed in the first place. Getting players around the globe, living in different time zones with a RL 'on the side', to play against each other takes time - even when both players are more than willing to play. So giving matches/rounds more time to get completed would make this thing more manageable for the participants.

Yes, the event would take longer then... but perhaps more matches could be completed.

By the way, my own planning got mixed up, because - at the last moment - the starting time was changed, because of a technical problem. Although this event was the best 'practice' one can have, I'd say tackle/try out the technical side first, and then come up with a starting date.
In the future, I think there should be cooperation with Forum Mods to do organize the following threads:

2 threads made for the coordinator (Vlaer in this case) to post updates on. 1 for combats, 1 for Tavern. No one else can post here.

A 3rd thread for people to ask questions or give comments to the coordinator, so that he can make sure there is no confusion or misunderstanding.

A 4th thread that is for open discussion among the partipants.

I don't think mods have a option for just player x post in this topic. And, the only possibility for do it, is closing the topic and ask for a mod re-open it when needed (ahh, but that takes time and patience)

Great, it would be nice.

It also would be good. I think 3-4 days would be good.

I don't think they do, but surely people will respect this and also mods can delete and redirect other peoples posts
bracket is the correct term for those schedules.

Yup, it is :p
