In quick tournaments, I heard somewhere your troops and hero are ai controlled, is this true?

Yes, you settle your troops and then either select attacking or defensive mode and the AI takes control.

In defensive mode your creatures wont attack unless an enemy troop is right besides them(or in front) and in attack mode they will run in front completely
