AuthorBiggest Cyber attack in history
The entire Internet has been experiencing a traffic slowdown this week, and it's all being blamed on a Dutch-based web host who allegedly has launched massive denial of service attacks.

If you have been trying to stream your favorite movie on Netflix today, or download your legally purchased copy of BioShock Infinite, you may be thinking that your connection is slower than normal. In this case, the problem may not be with your local ISP but with the entire Internet.

The BBC reports that the source of all these issues is a denial of service attack on the domain name servers run by Spamhaus. Its CEO, Steve Linford, claims that their servers have been under attack for over a week with peaks of 300 GB a second. Even though Spamhaus has stayed up and running, the attacks have caused Internet traffic globally to slow down.

So what caused this attack? Spamhaus also hosts blacklists that are designed to stop email spam around the world. Recently, the non-profit organization used its email spam list to block servers from Cyberbunker, a Dutch-based web hosting service. Spamhaus claims that Cyberbunker is working with other criminnal groups in Eastern Europe and Russia to launch these denial of service attacks. A spokesperson for Cyberbunker did state that in their opinion, Spamhaus was abusing their power by blocking Cyberbunker but did not actually admit to being involved in the cyber attacks.

When the attack started, on March 18, it measured around 10 Gb/s. On March 19, it hit 90 Gb/s, on March 22 it reached 120 Gb/s. This still wasn't enough to knock CloudFlare or Spamhaus offline. So the attackers escalated.

Today, CloudFlare wrote that one of the Internet's big bandwidth providers is seeing 300 gigabits per second of traffic related to this attack, making it one of the largest ever reported.

This is bad news for the Internet. 300 Gb/s is the kind of scale that threatens the core routers that join the Internet's disparate networks.

Sounds hurt me because my net is running so slow after 27th march it takes about 5 to 10 minutes on ''loading textures'' and 3 to 5 minutes on loading objects whenever i go on a battle :(

And please do not post evil comments like '' It's just your net slow do not be greedy get a better internet connection because my net is running fine'' but still I will love to get some more comments about that matter and when it's gonna fixed.
i agree,i was downloading at the download rate which was 120 kb/s a month ago is 1.1 kb/s :/ totally ridiculous.Anonymous did do DoS attacks but like this =.=

dang my fingers >.<
Yeah, download speeds took the dump, on speedtest.net it was shown as 0.4 Mbps onstead of 3.1 mbps but upload speeds remained same
for TraumatizedSoul:
which ISP do you have?
it was on newspaper but anyways ty for info.
for iamtheworldking-
MTNL unlimited plan XD 4 Mbps max speed at night
my download speed used to be around about 8mb
now its 3.5
My connection problems have only been with LWM.

My first 20 or so Portal fights were fine and then I would wait ages to load battle and eventually it got so bad that I would maybe manage to move 1 out of 4 times and fled from battle for the first time ever. I did my last few battles solo to avoid the timer and did not manage to complete my last 12ish tries.

While this lag was going on I checked some other sites (Netflix included) and they were all running at full speed with no lag or connection issues so I guess the segment I am on is okay for local traffic but just has a problem when trying to reach the LWM servers (though not all of the time).
to be true, nowadays my net is faster :P
yeah, agreed that lags with lordswm was super high, fled from battle in front of my face :-O. however my dota2 updates were happening at 85kbps speed instead of usual 450kbps <.<
yah i agree to that lordswm is lagging more then other sitesit takes 3 minutes to load a blank screen :(
My Lords is fine, others are lagging
My Lords is fine, others are lagging It does not lag constantly but if you were trying to play when it was you would certainly know about it.
I reported the same problem
the lag cost me a battle :D
Same here..it seems the lagging period is very random and i won't know when its gonna happen
Many players blame LWM when the game is lagging. It is rather easy to find where the problem is. Start with running this from a command prompt:
tracert www.lordswm.com

You will get a list looking like this:

1 1 ms 1 ms 6 ms [email protected] [192.168.8.1]
2 32 ms 33 ms 34 ms gw1-no129.tbcn.telia.com [90.224.172.1]
3 38 ms 37 ms 39 ms kbn-b3-link.telia.net [213.155.133.252]
4 54 ms 52 ms 60 ms kbn-bb1-link.telia.net [80.91.246.46]
5 49 ms 49 ms 69 ms s-bb3-link.telia.net [80.91.247.160]
6 46 ms 48 ms 58 ms s-b3-link.telia.net [213.155.131.121]
7 49 ms 49 ms 52 ms retn-ic-135938-s-b3.c.telia.net [213.248.74.194]
8 73 ms 78 ms 79 ms ae1-9.RT.MR.MSK.RU.retn.net [87.245.233.9]
9 82 ms 73 ms 72 ms 178.248.235.15

This command tries to ping each internet node 3 times starting with the closest and ending with LWM.

In this example we can clearly see that there is a 30ms delay between node 1 and 2. It is the ADSL line between my house and the station. There is also a delay well over 20ms between node 7 and 8. It could be a long cable such as across the Atlantic. Everything is working perfectly well in this example and I can ply without problems.

In case of a bad connection between two nodes, you will have missing or slow packages from all nodes after that one. You might need to run the command several times to really see a pattern.

When you think you have found where the bad connection is, you can ping the nodes before and after with the following commands. I'm pinging the nodes 7 and 8 from my example above:
ping 213.248.74.194 /n 100
ping 87.245.233.9 /n 100

You should now probably have all pings to the first example working fine and many pings to the second one go bad or be heavily delayed.

Congrats. You have now found the problem and you can hardly do anything about it. The only thing that might help is to change your ISP to someone that connects to LWM via a different route. At least you know that the LWM server is working and it does not help to blame the admins here.

OK, I admit, there can be a problem with the LWM server too. In that case you will find that the last line with the LWM server IP, 178.248.235.15, have missing packets, and the line above is without problems.
Interesting... this has absolutely no effect on my net.
